And #ElSisi For President 2014 is on

And with in hours from promoting Abdel Fatah El Sisi to Field Marshal "Despite he did not lead the armed forces in any real war" , SCAF held its meeting to discuss matters like the situation in Sinai .. and El Sisi's presidential bid.
And from few moments ago SCAF announced that it delegated/mandated Field Marshal Abdel Fatah El Sisi in the upcoming presidential elections. Yes SCAF representing the Egyptian armed forces announced its political support to Abdel Fatah El Sisi as a president like any other political party !! They even voted for his support , you know like any high office in any political party.
Oh yes now El Sisi will run in some farce in front of couple of candidates in a decorative way in front of the world which knows now that it was a coup more than saving a growing democracy from a fascist religious group.
Already now the mainstream media whether press or radio or TV says President Abdel Fatah El Sisi already.
El Sisi has not resigned yet from his position by the way.

Of course yesterday interim president Adly Mansour announced that the Presidential elections would be held before the parliamentary elections. Accordingly candidacy will be open next 14 February 2014 if I am not mistaken.
There is news that chief of staff Sedky Sobhi is going to be appointed as minister of defense. Ironically according to the new Constitution the upcoming minister of defense will be far more powerful than upcoming President El Sisi.
Any Armed forces Spox Colonel Ahmed Ali said that those speculations are untrue we should wait for their announcement.
It is worth to mention that El Sisi said in July 2013 that he was not looking for any position so the army would not be accused for seeking power. These were his own words in summer 2013. Of course Field Marshal Abdel El Sisi and the Egyptian armed forces should be careful , very careful because I remember that the Muslim Brotherhood said the same thing and later they got candidates after all. Be very careful.
Oh former deputy PM and representative of so-called Democracy camp in cabinet Dr. Ziad Bahaa El Din , your resignation was too damn late.
The answer is and has always been Tunisia so far.

The Future That We do not want to see in #Egypt

Today was another round of Morsi trial saga where the ousted president shouted at the judge behind a glassed cage reminding him on he is and some defendants were found out to be dead in Gaza as well to be prisoners in the Israeli prisons for several years now before January 2011.
Still nothing captured my eyes in this trial except one picture or rather a scene that captured the eyes of photographers waiting outside the police academy where the trial is held.
By Mohamed Hossam
It is like the famous quote in George Orwell's 1984 "If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human faceforever "
This girl is the future of Egypt and the military boat represents the military and you got El Sisi’s poster in the back. This is a future I do not want to see in Egypt. I do not think anyone with dignity and hope for this country would like to see this future or picture.

 Here is the complete family.
By Mahmoud Khaled /AFP

To be honest I want to throw those military boots in the face of those parents from El Sisi supporters. The photographers as I hinted above did not leave them alone , in fact the parents seemed to enjoy the attention.
Masrawy
The girls do not look happy the way I see it.
There is no difference between this family and the Muslim Brotherhood when they made the children wear shrouds in Rabaa sit in. There is no difference between this family or the orphanage that made little girls wear summer cocktail clothes carrying El Sisi posters from couple of weeks ago.
Unfortunately the photos of adults including elderly with military boots over their heads spread recently in Egypt thanks to El Sisi-Mania in very shameful sad scenes. This has nothing to do with respect and love of the army or the country , this has to do with basic self respect and dignity.
Enough of this disgusting hypocrisy. If you love your country and your army , you do not need to humiliate yourself and humiliate your kids.

And ElSisi Competes Abu Ismail in Posters yet Abu Ismail wins

Yesterday Egyptians woke up to find the posters of Field Marshal Abdel Fatah El Sisi all over main bridges and highways in Cairo and Giza especially on October bridge.

The posters had his famous picture with the lion in the background and phrases like “The people’s will” , “The Citizen’s sovereignty” or “Mr.Citizen” {I do not know what they mean here actually} , “Complete your path” and “People’s call”.
Those who hate the Field Marshal of course did not waste any time in vandalizing the ads.
To  be honest there is another potential candidate who got his ads over October bridge : Mr. Ahmed Mokhtar whom we do not know nothing about him in some irony. His posters are over October bridge near Heliopolis.

Who is that guy ?
Now I got a set of questions regarding these ads :
  • Who stands behind them ?? Who paid their cost !?
  • Why did the government or rather Cairo governorate and Giza governorate approve this campaign !? As far as I know they have to approve for publicity and ads to be hanged like this on the bridges and highways. Why would they approve these ads before the presidential elections campaigns kick off officially ???
  • Is not this considered an indirect if not direct support to Abdel Fatah El Sisi in his upcoming presidential elections ? Thus a huge violation to the principles of the regime’s neutrality in elections and as well the elections fairness and equal opportunity between candidates !?
  • Is this consider fair to start the presidential elections’ campaigns in this indirect way !?
Thank Goodness I am not the only one who got these questions , other websites are asking the same questions in Arabic.
Of course comparing to Abu Ismail , the Islamist controversial preacher wins after all his boys spread his posters all over the buildings , bridges , walls and even cars. We got their traces so far while Hazem Salah Abu Ismail is in jail now !!
Now and then

This is an indirect Guest blog post I am proud to present. Writer/blogger and tweep Iyad ElBaghdadi wrote in a series of tweets brief history of Chile's coup in 1973
I wish someone would translate these tweeps in to Arabic
One of our problems in Egypt is that we do not read history whether our own history or other countries' history in order to learn how to avoid mistakes. We do not read history in this way because we are not learned in our education system to do this properly unfortunately.
Ironically and sadly some people warned of having a Romanian Counter revolution scenario in Egypt including people like Alaa Al-Aswany but no one wanted to listen. Some warned of having a Chilean scenario in Egyptbut no one wants to listen. Some warned of having another 1954 scenario and are warning of another Nasserite era with its cons before its prosbut nobody wants to listen.
I know every country has its own circumstance and time plays an important role but yet again the same mistakes are committedand people are paying the price.
Here are the tweets of Dear Iyad gathered in a storify post below.

Actually #Jan25 Presented the alternatives

$

Lately the mainstream media and the Pro-Military supporters and Pro-Mubarak supporters as well the seasonal supporters {Who change their political support and affiliation to latest political fashion whether it is right or wrong} are claiming that the 25 January revolution did not represent any political alternative and so the people have to choose the only option they have got “other than the Islamist alternative they tried and failed”.

“The revolution people did not give any solutions and they have been arrogant” This idea has been spreading like fire in the media and some people with short memory are buying this. Well contrary to this myth the 25 January revolution has presented several alternatives that were not chosen by the people and were rejected “and fought most of the time” by the regime whether in time of SCAF or Morsi or now.

Let’s go back in history :

  • Starting from March 2011 Constitutional amendments referendum , most of the revolutionary forces and powers rejected the amendments demanding a Constitution first option. SCAF and the Islamists were supporting the Constitutional amendments. I remember all the anti-Revolutionary Pro-SCAF Pro-Mubarak Facebook pages calling the people to vote yes just like the Islamists TV channels. The majority chose yes.
  • In parliamentary elections 2011/2012 the Revolutionary Forces presented “The Revolutionary continues Bloc” as an alternative which did not win but it was there despite it did not have the money or the media exposure or campaigns compared to the masters of the elections whether the MB or Mubarak’s regime remnants. Several young revolutionary faces run in the parliamentary elections in new parties. Very few made it because the Islamist parties above them Freedom and Justice party and its electoral bloc won massively. Why did FJP win !? Of course the same people who are chanting now about how great the simple Egyptians danced at the Constitution referendum used to say that Islamists won by buying votes using food supplies. Well it is not only about food supplies and promises of heaven , I remember doing the coverage of the parliamentary elections and I used to hear that “We are going to elect the MB and its bloc because they are the only people we know” as well “let’s try the MB". It is worth to mention that in that parliamentary elections we found Nasserite Party “El Karma” of Hamdeen Sabbahi joining the Freedom and Justice Bloc and we found the current minister of manpower Abu Eita in the parliament for the first time. When I look to what happened to the parliamentary elections I can not ignore again that there were alternatives but people feared to try them.
  • In the Presidential elections 2012 the presidential candidates allegedly representing the revolution were there and yes they made a horrible mistake that they divided the votes but they were there. They were there but the people , the majority of the voters chose the most radical opposite candidates in the first stage of the elections.
  • The police reform and restructure initiatives : There are at least 4 initiatives presented by human rights organizations in the past 3 years. One of them was represented to Mohamed Morsi and his administration but he completely ignored it. One of these initiatives is Police For Egypt.Police for Egypt initiative was made by a group of human right organizations and activists as well police officers.

By the way I wanted to speak about the social and economic grassroots movements but I feel that they need a standalone post.

Unfortunately the people though that the Jan25 youth were an end where actually those youth are the means. The problem is that the people need to understand that they are the ones who make the change not some savior leader or savior regime.

The people must understand that they have to participate more in the political life and stop siting on their couch. I know it is hard after 60 years and I know the current regime wants the Pre-25 January status.

One of the deadly mistakes or rather the traps we fall in to is that the revolutionary powers allowed the media and regimes to limit the 25 January revolution in the Tarhrir square and not to spread it all over Egypt. Also one of the biggest challenges in order to ensure a true democratic transition in Egypt is to make sure that citizens themselves participate in the transition and in political process starting with the municipal councils and local councils.

The NDPians are waiting madly and have been organizing themselves for the upcoming local councils “30,000 seats at least” all over the country. The Pro-Revolution people have not forgotten the importance of the local councils and for two years “The Municipals” Campaign of the revolutionaries has been speaking online “unfortunately” on the necessity of reforming the local councils systems.

Similar website “Tadamun” speaks about the same thing but in more sophisticated way bringing examples from other countries.

Speaking about locals councils , I can not forget similar campaign which is focusing on improving poor neighborhoods “Neighborhoods by Names only”. BY the way this campaign lost one of its members in Mohamed Mahmoud clashes 2013 late Student Mahmoud Abdel Hakim and several of its members including Ahmed Mandour were detained for protesting in the past few months.

Of course now some smart pants are saying that the Pro-Revolution people should get up their asses to spread awareness about democracy and so on. Well those people forget that campaigning against the current constitution led people to jail. Those people actually have not read the New protest law as it organizes public political meetings as well. OH yes we are back to Mubarak days. In other words campaigners like Askar Kazeboon that used to roam the country showing the violations of both SCAF and MB using projectors and building walls will be arrested if they dare to go to the streets once again.

The youth are still using social media to spread political awareness but it is not enough in a country like Egypt facing a legacy of 60 years and a mainstream media I am sure will kiss the ass of anyone leads this country if he is a Martian invader !!

Nevertheless we should not lose hope. The revolution has presented an alternative and will continue to present alternatives as long as people are learning from their mistakes and not losing hope.

After all the future is ours insh Allah.

The Political Marshal is about the Naked Emperor

Yesterday writer and columnist Balel Fadl shocked many of his fans online that his op-ed in Al Shorouk Daily Newspaper was bannedand he ended his work there.
" Unfortunately my op-ed was banned in Al Shorouk yesterday and today. An apology was published by name without my knowledge. The op-ed was speaking about field Marshal El Sisi and Mr. Heikal"
Known for his anti-military views and powerful recent columns against ElSisi unlike any other writer in Egypt in printed media , most people suspected that the military had something to do with it.
Couple of hours news began to spread that the military has nothing to do with it and actually it was banned because allegedly Fadl spoke negatively about renowned and veteran journalist Mohamed Hassanein Heikal .

That theory was enforced because Heikal's son Ahmed , the famous businessman owns shares in Al Shorouk newspaper.
Nevertheless Hassan Heikal , the renowned businessman and the son of the veteran journalist stated that the newspaper made a mistake.
Then we knew that Emad Hussein , the editor in chief was the one who decided to ban it.It was not his first time to do this as op-eds of Tamim El Barghouti and Ahmed Shoukry as well Reem Saad.
Hussein is already another Nasserite writer who sees El Sisi as the new Nasser.
Fadel revealed on his twitter account that some ofop-eds were edited before without his permission.
By the wayAl Shorouk website has different editorial team and management than the printed version. Already Anti-military Anti-MB Pro-Revolutionary writers like Ahmed Samir writes in Al Shorouk web version online.
I read the op-ed which Mada Misr published in both Arabic and Englishand I could not find an insult to Heikal that can lead to its ban. Already it is not about Heikal , it is about Field Marshal ElSisi. It is about his latest promotion. It is crystal clear and yet people are insisting on the Heikal's theory because it seems that we are started to speak about "The one who should not be named"
Now Emad Hussein had to fire back. He issued a statement claiming that the op-ed of Belal Fadl was not published because it was not accuratewhen it comes to the relationbetween El Sisi and Heikal !! read it below and tell me about its accuracy.
By the way I do not think that Fadl or Mada Misr fantastic team will be angry if I posted the English translation of the powerful op-ed here.
Actually I am proud to do so because this op-ed is important. It is highly recommended. Please read it and tell if it is about the veteran journalist or about being a field marshal.

The Political Marshal

Whether Mohamed Hassanein Heikal is preparing Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s electoral program, as published by privately owned daily newspaper Youm7, or whether he is maintaining his position as an expert who never withholds advice as he has previously mentioned, there is one question that preoccupies me in both cases. Did Heikal recount to Sisi the details of his conversation with renowned British military commander Bernard Montgomery when the latter visited Egypt on the occasionof the 25th anniversary of thefamous Alamein Battle? Back then, Heikal met with Montgomery and they had a long conversation.

Montgomery, who had the title of field marshal, expressed his astonishment at the granting of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Abdel Hakeem Amer the same title on a political basis, without any military achievements that would entitle him to the promotion. This astonishment was recounted by Heikal, who quoted Montgomery’s own words.

Heikal recounted the incident in his engaging book, “Revisiting History.” On page 180 of the Shorouk Publishing House edition, he wrote that Montgomery described Marshal Abdel Hakeem Amer as a political figure. “There is absolutely no need for a political marshal. Marshals claim their titles for leading troops in the field, and not because of anything else,” Montgomery said, according to Heikal. And this is how Heikal responded: “I interrupted him saying: ‘I may differ with you, however, why don’t you ask him when you meet him?’ So he said: ‘Can I really ask him that question when I meet him and would the question anger him?’ I said laughing, ‘I don’t know.”’

Mr. Heikal didn’t recount afterwards whether Montgomery asked this contentious question or not.
In his conversation with Heikal, Montgomery did not only raise the issue of granting Marshal Amer a military title without the necessary military accomplishments, he went straight to the heart of what he saw as a problem in Egypt, namely the relationship between military men and civilians.

He started his conversation by recounting a disagreement he once had with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill — one of the most important British politicians of all times — during World War II. Montgomery told Heikal that Churchill had sent him an angry message during the outbreak of a battle with the German army under the command of Marshal Erwin Romel, asking him to mount an offensive and not be confined to defensive tactics. Montgomery answered him back with a message that he dictated to his chief of staff, General Francis de Guingand, and it read: “I urge the prime minister to attend to his position and to leave me to my area of expertise.”

Montgomery asked his deputy General Guingand, who was accompanying him in Egypt and was at the meeting with Heikal, to testify to his account. Montgomery added, “I don’t like it when politicians turn into generals and I also don’t like it when generals turn into politicians.”

Heikal recounts his reaction as follows: “Suddenly, as I gave him all my attention, Montgomery crossed all barriers and asked me: ‘Why do generals in your country turn into politicians?’ I tried to stall for time by asking him, ‘which generals?’ He said quickly — ‘Nasser and his colleagues.’ I said, ‘Nasser is not a general and his last military title was colonel.’

He continued his attack and said, ‘Ok, let me amend the question — ‘Why do colonels turn into politicians?’ I said, ‘Ok, let me tell you the story in detail.’ I went on to explain to him the situation in Egypt, its development, the conditions surrounding the [1952] revolution, how those who orchestrated it were a group of young men from the army who undertook this action in their capacity as patriotic youth and not army officers. Their main mission was to usurp military command, so that the king would not use the Armed Forces against the people.

The Armed Forces were under the service of the popular revolution, in order to safeguard its objectives. Then I explained the circumstances of the Third World in general, and the role played by the army here, which is the only institution capable of sustaining itself during times of crisis.”

Montgomery didn’t find Heikal’s explanation convincing, so he told him: “You didn’t manage to convince me.” And this was Heikal’s surprising response as he wrote it:“I am not trying to convince you. How can I convince you of something I am not convinced of? I was explaining to you the situation. I wasn’t trying to set a norm. In fact, I am not a proponent of military intervention in politics. I don’t want generals to become politicians as much as you don’t want politicians to become generals. But, we are facing a phenomenon in Egypt and the whole Third World that requires an explanation. When I explain, I don’tuse that as an excuse. Isaid: ‘At any rate, you will meet President Nasser and I suggest you ask him the same question yourself.’

Montgomery said: ‘You don’t think the question will anger him.’ I said: ‘I don’t think so.”’
Unfortunately, Mr. Heikal ended the chapter on his conversation with Montgomery without telling us whether he asked Nasser the question or not. And if so, what Nasser’s reaction was.

I wonder whether Mr. Heikal would answer our critical questions today, such as: “Is he still not a proponent of military intervention in politics and does he remain convinced that granting military titles for political reasons is a mistake? And, if he had viewed the intervention of Nasser and his military colleagues in 1952 as justified to prevent the king from clashing with the people, what is the excuse now for the military commander to move from the position as protector of thepeople to that of ruler?

The people have generally been fully appreciative of the Armed Forces thus far, but the military’s intervention in politics could deepen political rifts in society, freezing democratic development and returning Egypt back to repressive times; a move that is supported by state media, its resources and its intellectuals.
Until Mr. Heikal responds to these questions himself, if he wants to, I am left to conclude that Montgomery's fears have come true and that the officers’ intervention in politics has left Egypt defeated. I don’t need to remind you of the “naksa,” which took place only one month after Montgomery's visit, which was in May 1967. Only the policies of Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser and Marshal Abdel Hakeem Amer are to be blamed.

May God protect Egypt.

#FreeAJStaff : Journalism is not Terrorism Indeed

Today not less than 180 journalists in Kenya held a protest in solidarity with the detained Al Jazeera International journalists in Egypt especially in specific Australian Peter Greste.
Greste , the award winning journalist was the correspondent  of AJE in Kenya and so his colleagues there organized the protest. The foreign Correspondents association in East Africa organized along other journalists at the Egyptian embassy in Nairobi. The protesters held signs and banners saying that Journalism is not terrorism and that "We are all Peter Greste"

The journalists tried to hand over books and letters to Greste to the Egyptian embassy staff but the one of the embassy's officials told them they can not because they do not interfere in judiciary and so on.
Anyhow the deputy ambassador got a copy from a letter by the protesters demanding the release of the detained journalists as far as I understand.
Interestingly  the Kenyan police was going to disperse the protest but the protesters brought up the Kenyan Constitution.  What I know that those journalists in Kenya are much respectable then their counterpart in Egypt.

The protest is part of a viral campaign to Free Al Jazeera"#FreeAJStaff". Journalists from around the world also have sending their images all day long from around the globe to show their support and solidarity with the trio "Fadel , Baher and Greste"
Thanks to the disgusting video given by the security to its journalist Ahmed Moussa and Tahrir TV , the campaign is fueled by anger as well determination.
This video was unbelievably shocking and disgusting.

First of all I do not think it is constitutionally correct to interrogate any person without his lawyer. Second since when cameras and laptops are evidence of criminal intentions. It is just wrong and disgusting on many levels. By the way is it legal for Tahrir TV to use the Thor theme like that when it owned by Marvel !? Nevertheless all the admiration to Mohamed Fadel for real.By the way all people intend to forget Baher Mohamed , please do not forget him.

If it is really about broadcasting false news , well I am sorry all Egyptians TV channels and newspapers as well news agencies including MENA broadcast false news that are affecting the social peace for real 24/7.By the way even for Egyptian journalists now it is hard to do our job. You can not go with your camera and film or take photos easily now because both people and security are mad over cameras even if you have permits.

Last week we found out that 20 journalists including Fadel , Baher  and Peter  were referred to criminal court for allegedly working terrorist organisation "MB" and harming national unity and social peace by broadcasting news after being detained for a month in inhuman conditions. If there is anything illegal Fadel , Mohamed and Gretes did , it was actually working without a permitand this is completely different than cooperating and working with a terrorist organization and broadcasting false news.

They are accusing Mohamed Fadel "Repent11"of being a Muslim Brotherhood member for God sake !!
Security apparatuses know Fadel very well all after all he was one of the experts in Sinai and the active producers in Egypt who was working in producing interviews with top Egyptian officials including Egyptian presidents.I do not know to say that who know Fadel very well and yet are not defending as they should !!
Fadel has a broken shoulder and is detained in the notorious Scorpion jail receiving no medical treatment

Anyhow today we found the Dutch journalist mentioned in the statement of prosecutor last week turned to be wrong and that another Dutch journalist is wanted and that journalist is none other than Rena Netjes who does not work in Al Jazeera international in the first place !! Rena left Egypt and now she is in Netherlands. Ironically Rena was arrested during Morsi and was accused of espionage by angry mob while doing interviews in New Cairo before she was released.

I feel so angry that Egyptian journalists are completely silent over what is happening . Only International Correspondents and news organizations like Christine Amanpour of CNN have been demanding their
By Pete Muller in Nairobi today
immediate release along other journalists detained in Egypt including Al Jazeera Arabic correspondents Abdullah El Shamy who was arrested during the Rabaa sit in dispersal while doing his job.

Abdullah El Shamy is on hunger strike now in Tora prison. He is now on the 14th day of his hunger strike. Of course things are bad for him because he was the correspondent of Al Jazeera Arabic TV channel which is so much hated. El Shamy sent letter from Tora prison just like Peter Greste. Here is Abdullah's second letter from Tora.

The Pro-Military/Pro-Police/Pro-Mubarak supporters are extremely happy for what is happening to Fadel and the rest of journalists. They also think that the government should kick all the foreign correspondents in Egyptand some of them are actually trolling the foreign correspondents on twitter.
Of course those people do not think about the PR Egypt is gaining if we think away of principles and those old fashioned words of democracy and freedom of expression. They do not give a damn after all they think the whole world is conspiring against us and that tourism will come right away. The same old mindset that led to the 1967 defeat.

I do not know how anyone still uses his or her mind believes for one second that Egypt is on the path for democratic transition or reform or anything related to true democracy people died for in the past 3 years.

Saving #VillaAghion , Saving #Alexandria

Wednesday morning culture and heritage activists in Alexandria woke on another disaster : Alexandrian Landmark Villa Aghion was being demolished by a court order for its latest owners in order to be replaced by another ugly cement huge building.
For months activists were trying to save this remarkable villa designed by August Perret in 1927 for Gustav Aghion as a private residence. Perret's Neoclassical designs are celebrated worldwide. Here is more about the villa.
The Perret Brothers already left a series of buildings in Cairo and Alexandria , their first was that villa.
When the bulldozers began their work , the activists of "Save Alex" initiative to save the historical villa calling the governor to stop this destruction process.
The governor , a former major general and a member of SCAF Tarek Al Mahdy with bunch of TV channels insisting that he gave strict orders not to demolish old buildings and villas.
Mr. Governor saves the day .. with TV cameras
Of course Al Mahdy had his own confrontation with the latest owners of the villa who showed him that the municipal council gave a permission for demolishing breaking his orders.
In the end the governor reached to an amazing idea , he froze the demolishing of the villa and decided to have talks with all parties involved in the matter.Ironically 50% of the villa was destroyed as you can see in the photos above.
The meeting after 50% of the villa was destroyed
Of course things are bit complicated because it turned out that the French Consulate in Alexandria asked the UNESCO to interfere because the work of Perret is considered a World heritage. They are celebrating Perret now in Parsi for heavens' sake !! Things do not stop here as I found out there is a legal fight between the current owners of the villa.
Here are photos for the villa before the bulldozers' attack.

The villa in the old good day
The blue print for the villa.
Now the demolishing works have been stopped but only for awhile after nearly 50% of the villa was demolished.
These old villas can turn in to small museums and cultural centers , these villas can contribute a lot to the cultural scene if you know how to use them in a new way.
“Save Alex” is an initiative launched by a group of youth in Alexandria mostly Pro-revolutionary who got sick from the cement aggression on the old unique Architectural Heritage.Nearly 70% of Alexandrian Neo-classical architectural heritage was destroyed in the past two decades.
Alexandria is on the verge of becoming another ugly cement jungle like Cairo. "Save Alex Heritage" was another initiative launched by those useless youth that do not provide alternatives have made dedicating their time and effort to save their city's heritage.
Just like the revolutionary youth , they are saying the social media and organizing protests and stands but with no enough media exposure. The state as in the governorate does not care much about their cause but rather the noise they are causing.
By the way one of the founders of this initiative ; Sherif Farag , a Pro-Democracy activist was arrested during the protests in the past months in Alexandria and is currently detained for no real reason. Here is a presentation prepared by Farag about his work in the initiative one month before his arrest.
Here is a very informative video by Janklees Studio about Villa Aghion partially translated in to English

I see Egypt as metaphor in this sad story. A younger generation is trying to save something valuable , something beautiful and historical and yet is faced by the greed and bureaucracy of older generations. They are trying to save beautiful things in Egypt for real but what can you say !!

The Return of #BassemYoussef on #MBCMasr

And Bassem Youssef has just finished the first episode of his new/old show “Al Bernmag” on MBC Masr and it was one hell of a return back after suspending his show from three months on CBC and ending his contract with that network.
By Rawya Rageh
The episode started with funny Sketch where Bassem hinted out to El Sisi/army mania in a funny way then it was the big show. Youssef and his team slammed CBC and its owner Mohamed El Amin. He also mocked other pathetic TV hosts who were attacking him exposing their overreactions. He claimed that he would
avoid the one who won’t be named showing a silhouetted photo of El Sisi but man he mentioned names several times. .
In the second segment Bassem continued speaking about the El Sisi-Mania in the Egyptian TV that extended to cooking shows and fashion shows !!
In the last segment Bassem Youssef hosted Cairokee band. The Pro-Revolutionary Band presented songs from its new album “Left lane” which is available now on iTunes. The first two songs were the best representation for what the Pro-Revolutionary generation and class feel right now in Egypt honestly.
Here is the full episode.

Al-Bernmag : First segment

Al-Bernmag : Second segment

Al-Bernmag : Third segment

Trending for hours now
The Pro-Mubarak/Pro-ElSisi/Pro-Military are mad as usual insisting that Bassem Youssef was irrelevant foreign funded agent who is jealous from El Sisi and so. They are so mad in a way you can not imagine it.
Now whether you hate or love Bassem Youssef , you must admit that he got the highest viewership in Egypt tonight. Everybody was waiting for the show. Now there is viral status on the Facebook that the number of Youssef’s viewers tonight was more than the number of those participated in the latest constitutional referendum.
Now speaking about the numbers  , you must know that both Bassem Youssef and “ElBernmag” hashtags as well “MBC Masr” have been trending for hours now in Arabic and English in Egypt.
Here is map of the trends from Trends Map showing Egypt and its most popular twitter hashtags now.
Trends Map of Egypt tonight
According to Topsy , there were 26, 495 tweets about Bassem Youssef in Arabic alone tonight up till now.
So yeah CBC lost a lot.
I think Bassem Youssef will not start mocking El Sisi personally except when the Field Marshal resigns from his position as the minister of defense and becomes so-called Civilian. It will be the real test for the wannabe Pharaoh and the funny guy. By the way some news websites claimed that Youssef reached to agreement with Saudi MBC group that he would not speak about the Kingdom in his show or about the Egyptian army. These claims were denied by Youssef on his twitter account.

#FreeJournalists : Some Egyptian Journalists began to Take a stand

I was wondering why or when the Egyptian journalists are not supporting their colleagues currently detained behind bars like foreign journalists.
Well people began to react at last in Egypt. Today I found a group of Egyptian photographers declaring their solidarity withe detained journalists in Egypt .
Freedom for detained journalists
I am not surprised because Egyptian journalists especially Photojournalists have been paying the price in the past three years especially in the past 6 months.
Here is also freelance photojournalist Jonathan Rashad showing his support to the detained journalist.
Photographer Jonathan Rashad
By the way the mainstream media in Egypt is claiming that all the journalists showing their solidarity to Al Jazeera detained journalists are actually journalists working in Al Jazeera and some people are actually buying this.
Today in the Strong Egypt’s Press Conference about the its position in the Presidential elections , the Young news correspondents and reporters staged one minute stand on air in solidarity with their colleague CBC Extra correspondent Mohamed Abdel Aal who was attacked by security forces on air for doing during his coverage to last Friday’s bombs on Giza bridge.
The correspondents at the presser
Here is the video of the incident.
CBC Extra Correspondent attacked on air.
It is worth to mention that CBC network Mohamed Al Amin took the side of the police and defended them , after all we are in war with terrorism and the reporter did not have his ID and so on !!
Al Amin’s statement
The journalists also organized a stand in solidarity with Abdel Aal at the famous staircase of journalists syndicate in Cairo.
Egypt’s correspondents stand
Foreign correspondents in Egypt began to show their support. Needless to say the local old media is opening its fire on foreign correspondents.
After all more and more journalists are in danger everyday , for God’s sake Egypt is chosen by Committee to protect Journalists “CPJ” as on of the most deadly nations for journalists along with Syria and Iraq in 2013. Oh yes Syria and Iraq !!!
Journalism now in Egypt is truly dangerous now.

#EinHijleh : Bab Shams Has not been closed yet

In complete silence and blackout from the Arab Media as well international media, a group of Palestinian activists restored the old village of Ein Hiljeh on river Jordan for 6 days after being forced to leave it from 40 years ago.
What started as an occupation process or rather reclaiming process in Bab Shams was back once again in Ein Hiljeh
Welcome to Ein Hiljeh sign. It was defaced by IDF now later
For 6 days the Palestinian activists from both men and women reclaimed their village and were actually rebuilding it. They were tens at first and then joined by hundreds before they were forced it to leave it by force.

Here is a photo gallery showing the village of Ein Hiljeh brought to life once again by its true owners.
Of course the IDF could not leave them alone for two nights they tried to kick the activists but failed out of the old deserted village. They stopped the food supply from reaching to the village but nevertheless the Palestinians brought food supply on horse in some cinematic scene.

The activists also began to rebuild the old village installing solar panels to provide electricity

Water pipes were installed. Women and children joined the original settlers and celebrated birthdays of children there. During the dull news of Egypt , I kept following the news of Ein Hijleh online only because the mainstream media was uninterested in covering this inspiring movement.
Unfortunately last Thursday the IDF managed to kick them from the village injuring some of them as well arresting and deporting the rest of them.

Here is the welcome graffiti of Ein Hijleh defaced by IDF as expected.

Nevertheless the Palestinian activists vow to return back.
This is what I love about the Palestinian activists , never give up your fight. The Palestinian activists are persistent and I believe they will continue in their reclaiming their land and villages again and again.
Ein Hijleh village is back to be empty for now but I believe that its original people will return one day and stay there not  for 6 days but for eternity.
We will return one day

#Syria : The Barrels of Death

El Assad and Co. introduce us to a new weapon dear world : The barrel bomb. According to Wikipedia the Syrian Air forces of Al Assad is the first to use it .. against its own people.

The first time I would see this barrel bomb on video was last week despite it has been used in Syria since March 2011 according to the opposition led Syrian National Council “SNC”.

Syrian activists showed footage for the barrels and the destruction they are causing in Daraya , Reef Dimshaq during the useless Geneva 2 talks.

Daraya : Barrel attack

Today people from a small town called Khan El Sheikh also in Reef Dimshaq witnessed another barrel attack.

Khan El-Sheikh , Reef Dimshaq–Barrel attack

Endless nightmare for Syrian between brutal regime and heartless radical regimes.

I am sorry that I do not blog anymore about Syria but things in Egypt recently make it hard for me to follow up other countries.

#Feb11 : Three years Later in #Egypt

From three years ago Egyptians did not sleep that night celebrating madly the ousting of a dictator that many of them believe that only death can defeat. From three years ago Egyptians especially the young ones had positive energy to change not only their country for better but the whole world.
Three years after ousting Mubarak , TV channels owned by NDPian businessmen are whitewashing Mubarak preparing us from his acquittal repeating the same lies we have been hearing in those 18 days. Now not only Hamas , Qatar , Iran and the US had killed the protesters on 28 January 2011 but also the Knights of Malta joined this world plot to bring down the Mubarak Egyptian state and destroy the army and police.
Three years after ousting Mubarak , the army closed down the square that witnessed that uprising which inspired the whole world for fear April 6 Youth movement would dare and tough its land once again.
Three years after ousting Mubarak and believing that we ended the police state , the police state is back and torture is back. People are afraid to talk once again. The media justifies all this in order to fight terrorism without realizing that we will increase terrorism in this way.

Three years after ousting Mubarak , we found out that we have not defeated the presidential cult as we got another new presidential cult growing sickly and disgustingly.
Three years after ousting Mubarak , freedom of expression is worse than the days of Mubarak !!
On the way to Tahrir on February 1,2011
Three years after ousting Mubarak , we found out that we only get rid of a man but not his regime nor that mindset that brought Egypt to the abyss after decades of leading the Arab world.
There are important lessons I think my generation and those who believe in Jan25 as a salvation for Egypt learned in hard way.
The most important lesson is that the revolutionaries that they had left the square , their own field too soon and that they trusted a class of politicians and leaders bred in Mubarak’s regime. Never trust the media , the police and the judiciary as long as they are not purged. Never trust the military when they talk about the promise of democracy.
Our deadliest sin we committed after February 2011 that we thought that Mubarak regime was dead where as it was renovating itself to survive in a new way as it has always done not only in the past 30 years but in the past 60 years.
I think we should not full to despair too much because true revolutions are full ups and downs , the story has not finished yet. We should learn from our mistakes , reorganize our front and seize the opportunity of purging it from all those double faced hypocrites in the media who are kissing the current regime's ass now cursing the revolution that made them famous.
And yes we changed the world by our own way , look to that Occupy and protests movement started all over the globe and remember how group of Egyptians overcome their political difference after completing what started in Tunisia in a public square on 28 January 2011.
You may think that  I am over optimistic but actually I am not. I am tired and exhausted like all those who believed in #Jan25 now.
The game is not over and I think we can change the world once again .. for better insh Allah.

Elsisi and .. Back to and From the U.S.S.R

And Field Marshal Abdel Fatah El Sisi is back from a glorious visit to Moscow where he got the blessing of its Tsar for his presidential bid as well finalizing the big weapons deal with the Russians.
Back from the U.S.S.R sorry from Russian Federation !!
The visit was a surprising one in its time and according to Russian news websites the Russians wanted it to be pushed back but the Egyptian party insisted , well there is a good reason why the Egyptian counterpart wanted to have this visit now. Supposedly according to many sources next Field Marshal Abdel Fatah will announce his presidential candidacy. He has no other time if he is going to run for presidency.

This visit is not about boosting truly the Egyptian Russian relations but rather to boost the image of Abdel Fatah El Sisi as part of his presidential campaign. It is not about finishing his work in the Egyptian ministry of defense aka the weapons deal. The weapons deal is about Egypt not about Abdel Fatah El Sisi not to mention we did not pay a penny it as it was our Gulf friends who paid the deal !!
Of course the media in Egypt is flying over the moon about the visit.
Last October the Russian FM and Russian Defense visited in Egypt and the visit was considered a historical one and a big slap to the States in the media despite the clear statements of Lavrov that Russia does not replace anyone  in Egypt.
The insistence on making El Sisi the next Nasser in the Egyptian media made journalists think in retro way , after all you will find people speaking in Egyptian media about the East Camp and the Soviet Union !!
Anyhow the main headline in that big historical surprising visit was not the arms deal or replacing our big international ally , the big headline was how El Sisi told Putin in their 10 minutes meeting and Putin praised the daring decision giving him the first endorsement an Egyptian potential presidential candidate.
Interestingly El Sisi told Kuwaiti journalist Ahmed Jarallah and his Kuwaiti newspaper that he would run for presidency before announcing the matter officially to the Egyptian public then he traveled half the world to tell Putin that he was going to run for presidency taking his blessing as a world power leader !!
Now to Putin’s statement.
Talk to me about Fair elections and international involvement in internal Egyptian affairs !?? Logic says that if you are against the American and Qatari involvement in Egypt why do you replace it with Russia and KSA , UAE and Kuwait !!??
Also I believe someone should tell the Field Marshall that his PR campaign outside was failing miserably as he is insisting on showing himself as an upcoming military dictator whether with the North Korean on-going cult about him or the crack down against his political opponents mainly from the true Pro-Democracy revolutionary camp or the choice of his new international friends.
Putin is the last person to speak about democracy and human rights and it is not about his country only but about his international friends whether in Ukraine or in Syria. Of course another question pops in to my mind. Now we are having the same views like Russia regarding the political solution in Syria, what does Egypt’s biggest ally and main financier in the region Saudi Arabia think about that !?
Of course Egyptian media especially newspapers and magazine like Rosa Al Youssef is claiming that El Sisi and Fahmy were received in some popular reception where the photos of Putin and Nasser were hanged !!!! Ironically the visit of the Egyptian officials was the main event in Russia because the Russians are following Sochi 2014.
Strangely judging from the activity of the Russian Foreign ministry’s English twitter account on Thursday , you would feel that the visit of the Egyptian delegation was not that important compared for instance the statement of Lavrov about Ukraine and its crisis.
Aside from the blessings of the Tsar for his presidential candidacy , the wardrobe of the Abdel Fatah El Sisi captured eyes and minds in the past 48  hours.
First he left Egypt wearing a civilian suit.

Leaving Egypt on Wednesday in Civilian Suit
The town went mad and strategic analysts kept telling us that that was a sign that the Field Marshal was transforming from a military to a civilian because you know it is about the suite !!!!
The Blue blazer and black pants were the talk of town.
The official explanation given to the Egyptians was that it was a long trip and he would change in the plane.
Then he wore the official army suit in Moscow. Ironically when the Russian Defense minister was wearing a civilian suit.
Then after meeting Putin , the Russian president gave El Sisi a present : The Russian Red army blue sweater jacket with a big socialist red star.
Big red star
Of course some of his groupies back in Cairo claimed that this is the biggest honor in Russia !!! I feel the one who started this lie was bluffing them and they believed him.
I do not know what kind honor this is but I know my mother “who likes Nasser” that an Egyptian army military man should not wear another army’s uniform regardless what especially in his position.
The amount of memes about El Sisi’s wardrobe was incredible in the past 24 hours for real.
Ironically only the kids and youngsters are the ones who are telling the people now that the emperor is naked regardless what but nobody wants to listen.
Now regarding the international relations of Egypt , it is good to have healthy balanced relations with the all the countries especially the world powers but I hope people understand that we do not live anymore in the 1950s and 1960s , things are more complicated than the days of the Eastern camp and western camp.Another fact Abdel Fatah IS NOT NASSER NOR SADAT and He WILL NEVER BE.

The story of Dahab

The story of Dahab is sad , simple and revealing on how far the human rights progress have gone so far in Egypt in the transitional period.

Updated at 2:20 PM :

The prosecution has ordered the release of Dahab for her health reason.

Dahab after giving birth last Thursday night
Dahab Hamdy , a 19 years old a pregnant wife with no political affiliation was arrested in Shubra last 14 January during the dispersal of some Pro-MB protest there. Since then the 8 month pregnant was detained in El Amirya police station and the prosecution used to renew her detention 15 days each time pending investigation.
For weeks Dahab Hamdy has been in detention in the police station. During her arrest , some police officer told her that she would give birth for her baby in prison.
Yesterday we found out that Dahab gave birth to baby girl in Zaitoun hospital while she was chained to her bed. She had a c-section by the way. Dahab got a very beautiful baby.
After giving birth to her baby girl , the police wanted to transfer her back to the police station , to the detention despite she needs medical care.
Human rights activist Nermeen Yosri visited her yesterday and today and she was shocked. The police only unchained when she goes to the bathroom after lots of pleas.
Now shockingly Dahab's lawyer told human rights activist Nermeen Yosri that they asked the help of the National council of woman but the Council did not help Dahab because she is accused of being a member in
Baby girl born in detention officially
the Muslim Brotherhood. With my all due respect the National council of woman has failed women in this particular , this is a simple woman that should stand for her rights. The National council of woman that is trying to save the women's rights in time of the Islamists are failing miserably to stand with the right of this young woman who got human rights recognized by the constitution and law for God's sake.
She is not even convicted yet of being a member of a terrorist organization that does not keep official records of its members. Even if she is a MB member , she deserves to be treated as a human.
According to Human rights lawyer and member of the National council of Human rights demanded the ministry of interior to release Dahab from detention.
Dahab today with her baby girl
Here is an interview from the Pro-MB RSSD network with Dahab Hamdy in Zaitoun hospital. Several people online are trying to do noise so the media would care about Dahab and her baby. Already I know some TV hosts are interested in presenting her case and began to talk about her creating some sort of awareness.

The Pro-Military/Pro-Police State/Pro-Mubarak are justifying what happened as usual claiming that suspects in Europe , in UK in particular give birth while they cuffed to their hospital bed !!

One billion Rising Flash Mob in #Cairo

And yes we had our own one billion Rising flash mob in Cairo to raise awareness about violence against women as part of a global event organized all over the world on last 14 February 2014.

Our ladies took the Korba street in Heliopolis and did their flash mob dance. Their dance was against sexual harassment.

Ironically it comes at time we hear about Dahab and similar cases of ladies facing physical abuses in detention and the return of virginity tests once again.

Anyhow this gives one hope that women , at least the middle class and Upper middle class women began to break social taboos. Thanks for their ladies for inspiration.

Taba explosion : Rewinding the bad history "Updated"

And for the first time today the tourists began to be the target of terrorists in Sinai. Just from moments ago an explosion targeted a bus carrying Korean tourists after passing the borders with Israel in Taba , the famous Red Sea resort.(The photos source : April 6 Youth on twitter)

According to the early MOI report 3 people were at least killed including the driver and over 20 others were injured. Israel sent ambulance to help the injured as many of them are in critical condition.Updated : 4 were killed and at least 5 Korean tourists in critical condition have been transferred to Israeli hospitals. It turned out that the bus was coming from Saint Catherine Mt and heading to Israel in some sort of religious tourist trip. Early reports suggest that the bomb was placed under the driver's seat. Some Israeli news website published a video showing the bombing of the bus from the survilliance footage on the Israeli part.
This is a new development as well an escalation in the terrorist attacks whose main target since last July 2013 in Sinai as well Cairo was security forces. We are back to the days of the 1990s where tourists were a main target. Actually we are back to the 2000s where South Sinai had its share from several terrorist attacks.
Now the attacks moved to South where tourism industry began to catch up.
I am concerned that after targeting the tourists in Taba in 2000s , the security forces unleashed hell abusing locals there affecting their relationship with the state till this day in addition to whatever happening in the North now from military campaign against the terrorist groups things will go from bad to worse to worst. Just today after the return of the communications in the North Sinai for couple of hours , I found as usual the alarming posts and tweets of the activists and tweeps there.
It is not a secret that I am terrified that the current 1960s atmosphere and presidential cult we live in Egypt in addition to this terrorism will end in the loss of Sinai just like we did in 1967 but in different way.
Another sad day.
