A UN Security council draft resolution tale "Updated"

$

0
Since Thursday, there has been nothing I have following politically except the UN security draft resolution to end Israeli settlements in West Bank drama.
I was really happy Thursday morning to know that Egypt presented on behalf of the Arab league and the Arab States a draft UN security council resolution that "considers the Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 illegal".

The UN security council would vote on it Thursday evening Cairo Local time.
Then came Thursday afternoon with ongoing drama that started with the US-elected President Donald Trump's tweet demanding current President Obama to veto the resolution.

That statement was not strange for me because after all Trump's in-laws donated for the construction of illegal settlements in the West Bank according to Israeli Haaretz Daily.
The reports came afterward from Tel Aviv and New York that Israel is using all its powers to stop this resolution from going forwards.
The News came from Tel Aviv that Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and his advisors are using all kinds of pressure to make Egypt withdraw this resolution.
Normally as Egyptian and Arab, I know that usually those kinds of resolutions are met with US Vetoes but it never hurts to try.

A similar draft resolution was presented in 2011 and was vetoed by the States.
Then the news came that Egypt decided to postpone the vote after those alleged Israeli pressures per Israeli and international media Thursday afternoon.
At the same time, it was spread in the media through Western diplomats that the US would have abstained for the first time if the vote had taken place.
Sisi and Trump

"Egyptian Presidency"

The Egyptian foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid told Sky News Arabia that Egypt decided to ask for postponing the vote for further consultations on the resolution whether with the Arab states group in the UN or at the Arab League's Committee to End the occupation in Cairo.
The League's committee is made up by Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Palestine and it is the one that drafted the original draft resolution.

According to the statement published by Sky News Arabia at 5:57 PM, the Arab League's committee decided on Monday to evaluate the chances of passing that resolution.
At 7: 2 PM Cairo Local time,  US-based Al-Hurra TV channel diplomatic correspondent in the UN Nabil Abi Saab quoted Egypt's ambassador to the UN Amr Abo Al-Atta saying that he would wait for the instructions from Arab foreign ministers "aka the committee in Cairo" at 1 PM EST.

1 PM EST means 8 PM Cairo local time.
At nearly 10 PM Local time, the Egyptian Presidency announced that President-election Trump called President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the phone Thursday evening to discuss a number of issues above them the UNSC draft resolution of Israeli settlement.
According to the official statement released by President El-Sisi's office, the two agreed to postpone the UNSC resolution because:
" The two leaders agreed on the importance of giving the new administration a chance to deal comprehensively with all the aspects of the Palestinian issue to achieve a comprehensive, final settlement to the issue"
So officially we got here another reason other than consultations with other Arab countries about resolution.
The Pro-regime supporters cheered for that victory on how El-Sisi won Trump as he made Obama miss the opportunity to "score a point".
They also spoke about how Egypt regained its leading role.

First, this talk is just the streetwise "not-so-wise" of Pro-regime supporters who believe that Trump is better than Obama because he hates Islamists. Trump and his administration hate Muslims not just Islamists.
Unfortunately, those people do not know that Donald Trump administration seems to be worse than the Obama's administration when it comes to the Palestinian issue with its complete total bias towards hardliners in Israel.
The man is already nominating a hardline right-wing Zionist bankruptcy lawyer as the next US ambassador to Israel who does not believe or want the 2-state solution !!

Second, I think the issue of illegal settlements is more important than scoring points or having deals regardless what if we are going to speak about the true Egyptian leading role in the region.
Thursday night in New York, things were really hard to the Egypt's mission to the UN.
New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal that co-sponsored the draft resolution as UNSC non-permanent members told Egypt if Cairo did not have a clear position by the end of the day in an official memo, they reserved the right the right to proceed to put it to vote on Friday.
The Palestinian mission to the UN was part of that memo as well.

Friday afternoon, Egypt's State News agency MENA quoted an anonymous Egyptian diplomatic source saying Egypt postponed the draft resolution's vote is evidence of the deep vision of the current Egyptian administration because the UNSC issued more powerful resolutions against Israel and Tel Aviv totally ignored them in the past !!

The source added that it was clear that the Obama administration wanted to restrain Trump administration from taking "decisive decisions for a comprehensive settlement for Palestine !!"
Hours later, Egypt's mission to the UN withdrew the draft resolution completely.
And so New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal proceeded to put it to vote.

And so at 2 PM EST in a historical session by all means at the UN Security council, 15-member council adopted the resolution by a 14-vote in favor with one abstention: The United States.

And as former Egyptian FM Amr Moussa said that Egypt did good by voting in favor of the resolution. "He praised Obama"
Yes, thank God Egypt's mission voted in favor the resolution.
Friday evening, Ambassador Abo El-Ata told Extra News that Egypt had to withdraw the draft resolution because of "the political outbidding that reached to the levels of warning" referring to the memo of New Zealand, Malaysia, Senegal and Venezuela.

On Saturday, Egypt's MOFA spokesperson said that Egypt had to withdraw the draft resolution because it was worried that the United States or any other country would use the veto !!

On Monday the Egyptian MOFA Spokesperson said that Egypt took the decision to withdraw the draft resolution before the phone call between Sisi and Trump and that Trump was the one to call the Egyptian president !! 😑😑

Now the pro-regime media whether the mainstream or social media is claiming that what happened is actually a victory for Egyptian diplomacy because the draft resolution passed and we won Trump's administration !!!

I do not know how it is a "true" victory for Egyptian diplomacy nor how we got Trump's administration's support.

The Pro-Sisi supporters are also spreading rumors that the Egyptian mission "did not withdraw" the draft resolution which is untrue but it seems that Pro-regime

Trump's call with Sisi and presidency's call readout are completely ignored.
The true victory is Palestinian victory without a doubt. It is Palestine's Christmas present.

" Karel van Oostersom, head of Netherlands mission to the UN

Total respect for Malaysia, New Zealand, Senegal and Venezuela for putting international laws and human rights above all measure.
Israel won't respect that UN Security council resolution just like the other UN security council resolutions issued before above them the withdrawal of the land it occupied in 1967 where it is currently building illegal settlements.
Still, this is an important unprecedented resolution.
It is the first time since God knows when that United States does not veto a resolution against Israel.
It is the first time since God know when the security council countries voted for a resolution like that except one country that abstained.
I will quote Mohamed ElBaradei and what he said on Friday here.

"The security council: The settlements are a violation of the international laws. Regardless of whatever pressure and narrow interest, it is unfortunate to lose our national compass or our moral obligation"

It is worth to mention that Egypt among 52 countries abstained to vote for establishing a special independent panel to investigate war crimes in Syria earlier last week.

I feel angry that my country had an opportunity to create a difference for the Arab people twice in UN security council twice and it let them down because of political shortsighted vision.
We are losing officially moral obligation towards our fellow Arabs.

Alexandria's corniche in Bahry
Alexandria's corniche in Bahary
Just as thunderstorms and rain hit Alexandria right now, I remember how beautiful and calm it was in May.
Here is a quick shot I took while I was in the car to the famous Alexandria's corniche and people enjoying their time at the popular Bahary quarter.
Needless to say, the famous Corniche is currently "renovated" by the authorities.
The army's tourism subsidiary is building a huge touristic project where Al-Salam Theatre was once located and it seems that the Corniche is part of that project in Sidi Gaber.
The Alexandrians are rejecting that project and how it would destroy their famous Corniche. A group of them launched a campaign online rejecting that project.
That group even organized a small silent protest at the famous Stanely Bridge early December that I knew about it only from the social media.
Part of that protest in Alexandria against the destruction of the Corniche

I am lucky that I saw Alexandria this year as it is. 😕😑😑

The Ford Model A

You will never know what can you meet in the streets of Egypt nowadays !! Today I saw that Ford Model A classical car in a Giza street near the Saudi Embassy and Turkish Embassy.
The car seems in a need for a little renovation to be like that.
Ford Model A
Ford Model A in a better shape in the States

The car is up for sale and if you are interested, you can contact its owner on that number: 01276666049.
I do not know the owner but this is what is written on that piece paper on the windshield.
I do not know how much it is worth but I will guess a fortune especially with the high dollar price in Egypt.
I do not know much about the history of motors in Egypt but checking the very informative Egy.com website, it seems that Ford cars entered Egypt in the late 1910s.

Signal censored Once again in Egypt

It was too good to be true.
On Wednesday, I knew by accident that Signal is once against blocked in Egypt and people are using VPN once again to bypass the block.

I have tried it personally on both mobile phone "Orange 3G & 4G" and desktop "TEData & Orange DSL" and it turned to be true. I can not send or receive any message.

Last week, Open Whisper System confirmed that its app "Signal" was censored in Egypt after reports and complaints of users inside the country.

In the same week, a new update was released adding censorship circumvention for Signal users in Egypt and UAE.

It worked few days before the service was blocked altogether once again in Egypt. I do not know about UAE.
If you live in Egypt and want to use Signal, it seems that the VPN is your only option for the current time.
Interestingly, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority "NTRA" has not issued or commented on censoring Signal so far according to my knowledge.
By the way, Egypt's House of Representatives is going to discuss the upcoming infamous cyber crime law in January.

The new judicial authorities draft law : Back to the judges' anger

$

It seems that it is history repeating in a very a bad way, it is worse than what happened before in 2006.
Recently, Egypt’s House of Representatives proposed a draft law to amend the current Judicial authority that will kill what is known as the separation between authorities for real in the country if it is passed and ratified.
Proposed by a member of the Pro-regime “Support Egypt” Parliamentary bloc, the new draft law stipulates that the President chooses and appoints the heads of the four major judicial authorities in Egypt: The cassation court, the State council, The state lawsuits authority and the administrative prosecution authority.
In the current law’s article no.44, the heads of those authorities are chosen based on seniority by their general assemblies. The court presents the name of its senior judge as its head to the president and he just ratifies without rejecting or choosing another one.
In the proposed draft, the Supreme council of judiciary will present three names of senior judges from those authorities to the president and he/she will choose among them without any clear standards.
All the judicial authorities and clubs are rejecting the draft law which was discussed in December quietly somehow in the House of Representatives.
Egypt's Court of Cassation
The Cassation court in Cairo
The MP who proposed that draft law says it is based on Constitution article no.186 that stipulates the judges’ conditions and procedures for their appointment, secondment, delegation and retirement are regulated by the law.
On 25 December, the parliament decided to send the draft law to the 4 judicial authorities mentioned above in addition to the Supreme council of judiciary to know their opinion for consultation only in accordance with the Constitution article no.185 within ten days.
If those authorities do not answer back within ten days, the parliament will go on and discuss it.
The answer of the judicial authorities or rather judges is crystal clear, they completely reject the draft law and consider it as an attack on the separation of powers in Egypt as well the independence of the judiciary.
On the same day, Egypt’s Judges club said in a statement that that draft law was like an attack against the judiciary independence in the country. The Judges club also hinted out that the draft law that constitution stipulates on the independence of the judiciary in Egypt in article 185.

The Club revealed that it was preparing its own draft Judiciary authorities law adding that it was interesting to find the proposed draft law ignored many issues in the current law and focused on appointing the heads of the courts only.
It is like the 2006 standoff between Mubarak regime and the Judges club is back but unfortunately, I do not think we have the same Judges club of that year.
Needless to say, the current regime got rid of all the icons and big names that led the Judges uprising in 2006 starting either by early retirement or prison
Still, the current Judges’ anger “it has not reached to uprising yet” is not led by the Judges club but rather the State Council.
The State council is leading the battle which is growing by the day with all what is happening currently. This needs a separate post.

The state council club also issued a statement slamming the draft law describing what is happening now as an unprecedented attack on the independence of the judiciary.
“This attack on the independence of the judiciary is more dangerous than the attack of the Muslim Brotherhood on the judiciary during the rule of Mohamed Morsi” The statement issued by the State council club on 28 December read.
The State council club revealed that the State council already presented a law to amend its administrative courts system and the parliament approved it in August 2016.
Up till now, this law has not been ratified by the president for some reason.
The council is amazed by the speed on how the controversial draft law found its way in the parliament.
The council club explained in its statement how this draft law will create division among the judges who will seek the approval and support of presidency over their independence to be chosen by the president.

Yes, this draft law blows up both the separation of powers in Egypt and the independence of the judiciary.
I noticed that the proposed law only chose the cassation court, the state council, the state lawsuits authority and the administrative prosecution, the judicial authorities that challenge the government’s decisions, decrees as well the rulings of the court of First instance and the court of appeal.
More to follow and to speak about this draft and believe me it is better to stop here.
I got flu and we got islands fights, suicide, corruption and they end up at the State council and its courts eventually just like this dangerous law.

Prominent Egyptian activist Ahmed Maher, the co-founder of April 6 Youth movement and its former coordinator is out of jail. He has been released at last early Thursday after finishing a three-years prison sentence for breaking the protest law.
Maher already was released from prison on Tuesday but he had been on tour in a number of Cairo's police station for some unknown reason in the past 48 hours.
Here is the photo of Maher with his brother Mostafa and their friend Mohamed Samy from a couple of hours ago.

Samy on the left " Mohamed Samy"
The prominent Egyptian political activist is out of jail but he is still on a probation for three years and according to this he will spend 12 hours on a daily basis from 6 PM to 6 AM at a police station.
He is also not allowed to have any political activity in the upcoming three years.
He can not travel of course.
It is like that he is out of jail but he is not completely free.
According to his lawyer, he can appeal against all that ..only after 6 months !!
Maher was sentenced three years in prison along with April 6 Youth movement co-founder Mohamed Adel and political activist Ahmed Douma for breaking the protest law in December 2013.
Mohamed Adel is expected to join Maher and to be released from jail within few days.
Unfortunately, Douma is serving a life sentence in the December 2011 clashes trial in addition to three years for contempt of court "Remember Judge Nagy Shehata".
Personally, I am glad that both Maher is released without a presidential pardon. Hopefully inshallah, Mohamed Adel will join him.
I hope that they will be free soon for real.
FYI, the current coordinator of April 6 youth Movement Amr Ali is also serving three years sentence. in jail for possessing leaflets calling for the regime's overthrow.

It seems that the Egyptian government has not lost hope in blocking "Signal" private messaging app in Egypt.
"Signal" app was not working again last week. I have tested it myself on both iPhone and Desktop on Wednesday,Thursday and Friday on Orange DSL and 4G.
At the same time, Signal users in Egypt reported that they can not use Google's Search or Gmail on Chrome on iPhone and Desktop.
I did not have this problem on Desktop on iPhone to be precise.
We did not know that there was a connection but Open Whisper System confirmed that Egypt aka Egyptian government is still trying to block Signal's service in the country but they are trying to overcome this.

It is getting silly.

It also participated in International Documentary film festival in Amsterdam and Karama Human rights film festival in Jordan.
It already got very positive reviews from critics in Egypt and was considered one of the best Egyptian films produced in 2016 by Ahram Online.

The Cosmopolitan Egypt can be restored easily if the media stops spreading xenophobia before anyone.

Tiran and Sanafir : A big day for the Egyptian State Council

Early Monday, Egypt will be waiting to the know the final verdict of the High Administrative court on the Egyptian government appeal against the court verdict annulling the Egyptian Saudi demarcation deal in April 2016, which placed the Red Sea islands Tiran and Sanafir under Saudi
Egypt's State council
Lawyer Khaled Ali at State council "AP"
Sovereignty.
It is important day and it comes in a very critical time especially for Egypt's State council, which the High administrative court follows.
In June 2016, the administrative court issued its historical verdict annulling the Egyptian-Saudi deal to redraw the maritime borders and reasserting the truth that Tiran and Sanafir are Egyptian islands.
In August 2016, the Stat lawsuit authority which represents the government in front of courts challenged the court verdict and filed an appeal in front of the High Administrative court.
In the same month, it filed another lawsuit in front of the Supreme Constitutional court arguing the administrative court had no jurisdiction when it comes to the demarcation deal.
in September 2016, the Court of Urgent Matters suspended the administrative court's ruling in a surprise that stunned many mostly law experts because article no.190 of the current Egyptian constitution states that the administrative judiciary is the only jurisdiction in settling administrative disputes and only the High administrative court can challenge a lower administrative court's ruling.
The administrative court slammed publicly the Court of urgent matters describing it as "void" in what was considered a clash between courts thanks to the government.
In November 2016, the government again filed a second lawsuit in front of the Constitutional court.
On 6 December 2016, the State Commissioners authority which follows the administrative court presented its recommendations to the High Administrative court to uphold the court ruling to annul the deal stating clearly that "Tiran and Sanafir are Egyptian islands".
The recommendations are not obligatory to the court but some considered a good sign.
The High Administrative court set 16 January to issue its final verdict on the same day.
Late in the same month, the Judiciary community in Egypt above them the State Council Judges found out the parliament discussing a draft law that will affect their independence negatively, the new Judicial authorities draft law.
The new draft law would affect the judges' independence as it gives the Egyptian president the right to choose the heads of 4 main judicial authorities in Egypt above the State council.
The State Council judges club "their Union" has been the most vocal so far in the Judges community against the draft law.
On 25 December 2016, the House of Representatives sent the draft law to the 4 judicial authorities just to know their opinion.
On 27 December 2016,  Egypt woke up to the news that Gamal El-Laban , a Procurement manager working in the State Council was arrested by Administrative Control Authority "ACA" for allegedly receiving bribes worth of millions of Egyptian pounds.
Within hours, the State council found itself surrounded with accusations and attacks from the Pro-regime media especially rumors spread that some of its judges were involved in that bribes scandal.
On 29 December 2016, the Egyptian government referred the Egyptian Saudi deal to the parliament to approve in a move that considered to a clash with the State council as the lawsuit was still in front of the court.
On 31 December 2016, the former secretary-general of the State Council Wael Shalaby resigned from his position. On 1 January 2017, he was arrested and was detained 4 days pending investigations on charges of corruption and receiving bribes.
Many questions raised about Shalaby and his activities, especially that according to my sources, the man was a legal advisor to a number of authorities, intelligence agencies and governors.
Then on 2 January 2017, Wael Shalaby committed suicide using his scarf in his detention !!!!!
It was more than a strange suicide especially his lawyer's statement did not make sense.
First, his lawyer claimed that his late client told the prosecution and investigators that he would commit suicide on the next day !!! "And they let him do it"
Hours later, the lawyer claimed that Wael Shalaby was not confronted by any incriminating evidence during his interrogation and there was nothing against him !!
Shalaby's family believes that he was assassinated. Most of the Egyptians online "and offline" believe that he did not commit suicide on his own and he was silenced so "the big fat cats" won't be caught.
A number judges at the State council believe that he was silenced and they were angry according to my sources as well. They even tried to organize a memorial service for him in one of Cairo's biggest mosques but they were advised to cancelled. What I have heard so far that they are angry for all what is happening.
Some are connecting dots and believe those are not a series of misfortune events taking place for the State council.
I think you see now how the State council and its High administrative court feel the pressure in the past few weeks.
The High Administrative court will say its final verdict after few hours either to accept the Government's appeal and send back the case to another circuit of the court to start over the hearings once again or to reject the Government's appeal upholding the annulment of the deal.
I do not know what the court will say and I am not that optimistic knowing how much pressure being practiced against the State Council and the administrative court.
It is a big day for the Egyptian State council on Monday.
All what I know it is an important battle in a war to keep our islands as part of territories in the same way our ancestors who built Modern Egypt did.

And The High Administrative Court says its word : Red Sea's Tiran and Sanafir are Egyptian islands

And Egypt's High Administrative has said its word loud and clear on Monday: Tiran and Sanafir are Egyptian Island
Yes, in a historical verdict after a lot of anticipation and drama, the High administrative court rejected the government appeal against the administrative court ruling in June 2016 annulling the Egyptian-Saudi deal to redraw maritime deal, which placed the Red Sea islands Tiran and Sanafir under Saudi Sovereignty.
Here is the moment Judge Ahmed El-Shazly announced the famous historical verdict.
The verdict
I am so happy and people are so happy. I do not need to tell you that many people I know since early morning following the lawsuit and its update online and on TV.

Needless to say, security forced surrounded and nearly besieged the State council to the level that they did not let most people in including journalists.
After the verdict, there was a big celebration in the street outside the State council.

The Court issued its reasoning on the same day in 59 pages, I will read them right now.
Here is a PDF version in Arabic of the Court reasoning.

Judge Ahmed El-Shazly is a national hero right now in Egypt as news websites celebrate his verdicts since the time of Mubarak. His name is top trending in Egypt right now.
The "High Administrative Court" hashtag is also trending along with the "State council" hashtag .
In Some irony , he turned to be a direct cousin of Saad El-Din El-Shazly , Egypt's Chief of staff during October war.
The State lawsuits authority which represents the government says that it will study the reasoning while sources say that it will head once again the Supreme Constitutional court. Already it filed two lawsuits against the administrative court's original ruling annulling the deal.
The Parliament is in a big trouble. Already some MPs say that after Monday's verdict the parliament should not come near to the deal.
Again , this is an important battle in a long war with a regime that does not respect its people.
Thanks to all the lawyers , all the Egyptian citizens who stood behind the original lawsuit.
Needless to say #Tiran_and_Sanafir_are_Egyptian was worldwide trending on twitter early morning.

Tiran and Sanafir's court ruling echoes in Cairo

Here are the newspapers on Tuesday following Egypt's High Administrative court ruling to reject the appeal of the Egyptian government against the annulling of April 2016 Egyptian-Saudi demarcation deal.
Egyptian Newspapers on Tuesday
The best coverage goes so far to Al-Masry Al-Youm that dedicated its First page to the verdict and its impact.
Tiran and Sanafir are Egyptian
Most newspapers spoke about the deep trouble and crisis the Egyptian government and parliament are facing.

On the other hand , Al-Ahram Daily News ignored the verdict in its Front page which it dedicated to the second part of President El-Sisi's interview with major State-owned newspapers.

News reports say that the residents above the local tribes of South Sinai celebrated the court ruling that asserted the Egyptianhood of the two islands.
It is worth to mention that all Sinai MPs in North and South declared that they are against handing over the two islands to Saudi Arabia.
Needless to say , there is a huge political crisis in Egypt involving the two islands.

The High Administrative court said in its reasoning that the parliament should not discuss the deal.
On the other the Parliament Ali Abdel Aal and head of its legislative committee MP Bahaa Abou Shouka say that the House of the Representatives will go on and discuss the deal.
Other MPs have got something to say including those in the legislative committee : Do not discuss it
There will be clash without doubt between judiciary and the parliament.
Earlier this year, the cabinet referred the deal to the parliament in a moved that surprised everybody

The government is saying that it will head to the Constitutional court which means more tension.
Nothing came from the Egyptian Presidency so far.
Nothing official came from Saudi Arabia in the same way.

There was a hysteria on the Pro-regime TV talks shows Monday evening as almost all the Pro-regime TV hosts and guests were angry except Wael Al-Abrashi who actually celebrated the verdict !!
Notorious Pro-regime TV host Ahmed Moussa was more furious on Sada El-Balad TV channel to the level of calling those who believe that the Islands are Egyptians as "traitors".
The man had a meltdown on TV for real !!
The government's lawyer Rafik Sharif also had a meltdown to the level of attacking the State council and its judges !!
Ironically , Pro-regime supporters above TV hosts say that we should respect court rulings and verdicts.
Not only , Moussa and Sharif did not respect court rulings , those who continued watching them say that they can face legal consequences for their attack against judiciary.
It is worth to mention that there are 25 public figures including ousted president Morsi , activist Alaa Abdel Fattah and journalist Abdel Halim Andeel are facing an ongoing trial for insulting judiciary on social media.
Ironically and sadly , the Pro-regime TV hosts are attacking Sherif Ismail and his cabinet for the deal when we all know that it came from above.
The debate about the islands has not and won't stop. I said it before , it is a long war.

Abou Trika , the hearts terrorist and the curse of stupidity in Egypt

Some people are saying what happened late Tuesday night was a pathetic attempt from the Egyptian government to divert the attention from Tiran and Sanafir political crisis but it seems that attempt failed anyhow.
Mohamed Abou Trika
Mohamed Abou Trika
Late Tuesday, Al-Shorouk Daily announced that Cairo's Criminal Court added popular ex-footballer Mohamed Abou-Trika and 1499 others including public and political figures to a terror list.
Al-Shorouk Daily published a copy from the court order that surprised and shocked millions of Egyptians.
In May 2015, Abou Trika's assets and funds were confiscated by a government committee because he was officially accused of being a Muslim Brotherhood member.
For two years, he and his lawyers fought that order.
In June 2016, Egypt's Administrative court canceled the decision to confiscate his money but the government appealed it.
On 10 January 2016, the Administrative court upheld the June 2016 court ruling.
Now, many Egyptians are cursing the government and the regime above all.
Whoever thought about this right after Tiran and Sanafir verdict is so stupid !!! All people are really angry that the most beloved footballer in the last decade is being treated as a terrorist in his own country.
Last month, this man played in the FIFA team along with Football legends like Maradona
Abou-Trika is currently in Doha, Qatar where he works as a top football analyst in BeIN Sports.
He appeared on the channel during one of the AFCON 2017 football matches but he did not comment on what happened at all.
The popular football star appeared smiling.
Abou Trika
Abuo Trika on BeIN sports on Wednesday

His lawyer said that they are going to appeal against the decision to list him as a terrorist.

He has not commented yet about what happened on his official twitter account.
Back in Egypt, there is a lot of support to him.
Already we are speaking about the most popular and admired as well talented striker Egypt has seen in the past ten years.
There are several hashtags in Arabic supporting the former Al-Ahly star like #Trika , #Abou_Trika_is_not_a_Criminal  ,#Abou_Trika_is_not_a_terrorist  and #If_Trika_is_terrorist_and_I_am_terrorist
My favorite hashtag is the #hearts_terrorist
Even pro-Regime TV hosts like Lamis El-Hadidy and Wael Al-Abrashi are criticizing the decision.
Boldly, Pro-regime TV host Tamer Amin told the popular ex-footballer to return back home and to donate to the Presidential Fund "Long Live Egypt" even LE 1,000 to get off this list !!
Yes, Amin said  that on air !!

It is worth to mention that Pro-regime media has used to attack Abou Trika and accused him of being a Muslim Brotherhood and funding the Pro-Morsi Raba'a sit in.
Yes, he supported Mohamed Morsi but not publicly as other ex-footballers did.
The Truth for real is that Abou Trika was blacklisted by the Egyptian regime when he stood with Ahly Ultras fans in February 2012 after the terrible massacre of Port Said stadium which he witnessed.
The legend says that he refused to meet with Federal Marshal Tantawy, the head of SCAF then after the massacre.
Anyhow, this crisis proved that he is truly the king of hearts for real not in Egypt only but in the Arab world.
Maradona and Abou Trika
Trika with football legends including Maradonna earlier this month

I could not believe the amount of popularity of this man in North Africa countries.

More to follow inshallah tomorrow because there are 1499 others in that list

Seen in Alexandria: A view showing boats and yachts from the famous Greek club's restaurant in one fine afternoon in May 2016.
The Greek Club's restaurant is currently one of the most hotspots in Alexandria due to its great seafood as well greek food and an amazing view overlooking the port.
The Greek Club or the Greek Community club in Alexandria was originally founded in 1906 in another location as a social gathering place for the Greek community in the cosmopolitan city.
The original club was destroyed during the air strikes of the Nazis in the WWII and a new club was built in the current location in the famous Bahry quarter near Qatibay citadel.
Here are photos from the club and its exclusive beach in the 1960s and 1970s

There are other Greek clubs in Egypt, the most famous one is in Downtown Cairo in the famous Groppi building.
I think there is another Greek club in Port Said if I am not mistaken.
The Greek community in Egypt has been already the biggest foreign community since the 19th century. To speak about the contribution of the Greek in Egypt in the 20th century in one post will be unfair.
Currently, there are 4000 Greeks living in Egypt according to the 2010 census.
More photos from our time.
The view from there is breathtaking for real.

#Jan25 : May it remain scary memory for tyrants

Today marks the 6th anniversary of the 25 January revolution that kicked off with a protest against the minister of interior Habib El-Adly originally in Tahrir square on the same day in 2011.
Personally, the true day of the revolution was 28 January 2011 when the Egyptian people surprised the regime, the opposition activists and above all the world with their long-held rage.
But it won't harm to celebrate the 25 January as the Egyptian revolution day at all.
#Jan25 New Hope
Taken in Tahrir square on 25 January 2011
It seems a distant memory.
It seems so faraway.
Yet it is still and it scares tyrants and their supporters.
The pro-regime media says it fails repeatedly for the rest year.
The pro-regime media continues to defame it and insults its supporters every day and every week despite that alleged failure.
What I see in front of me that 25 January revolution despite its ups and downs ,especially downs still scares the tyrants and their media so much.
The Egyptian revolution has not failed yet.
After all , you can not expect logically the revolution to fix the errors and sins of more than 60 years and beyond in Egypt, in the Middle East with in three years.
The Egyptian revolution continues
It will take time.
May be, we won't see the outcome in our lives but at least we are trying to put the corner stone.
The Egyptian revolution is not over

Business tycoon , publisher and dead people : Abu Trika and the 1512 other names in that terrorists list

Last week the Egyptian people were in shock after knowing that their beloved footballer Mohamed Abou Trika was added to the terrorists list.
The news is still making people angry and the popular retired footballer received support and solidarity from fellow footballers as well media figures unexpectedly now for me.
But despite Mohamed Abu Trika deserves all the support and solidarity, yet there are 1512 people on that terrorist list that we should pay attention to as well.
Egypt's terrorist list
A copy of the names in the list from Al-Shorouk Daily Newspaper
which published the news before anyone else
Already, one thorough look at that list tells much about it.
Aside from Abou Trika, there are other prominent political and economic figures in the list.

There are 5 journalists in the list including journalist Hisham Gaafar, the CEO of Mada Foundation for media development who has been detained pending investigation since October 2013; Samhy Mostafa, the co-founder of RASSD News and publisher Mostafa Sakr whose assets were frozen in December 2016 over Brotherhood ties.
Sakr is the publisher of Daily News Egypt "DNE" and El-Borsa Daily. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi published two Op-eds about Egyptian economy in DNE during the Euromoney conference, Which DNE is a media partner.
Abu Trika and Mostafa Sakr
Publisher Mostafa Sakr and Footballer Mohamed Abu Trika
The list also included famous businessman Safwan Thabet, the founder of Egypt's dairy giant Juhayna who is currently abroad. Thabet was sentenced one year in prison for producing products that do not meet market standards in March 2014.
In August 2015, the Egyptian government confiscated the assets of Safwan Thabet in Egypt over his ties to Muslim Brotherhood.
His only known and confirmed relation to the brotherhood is summarized in the fact that his sister is married to the son of the late Ma'mun al-Hudaybi, the sixth general guide of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Ironically after the ouster of the 25 January revolution, it was said that he was Suzanne Mubarak Thabet's brother because of the "Thabet" family name.

The families of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and his advisers are on the list as well including his adviser Pakinam El-Sharkawy.

The list also includes reportedly 6 dead people including the MB founder's son Ahmed Seif El-Islam El-Banna who passed away in February 2016, former MB MP Nasser al-Hafi who was killed during a police raid in July 2015 and Abdel Nasser Haggag who was killed in Pro-Morsi Rabaa sit-in dispersal in August 2013.

There are reportedly two Egyptian Christians in the list.
I found one name: Hany Sorial.
Sorial was a member of the MB political party Freedom and Justice Party. The man who identifies himself as a "Coptic activist" is living in Australia. I think he is from the very few Egyptian Christians that have been supporting the Brotherhood in that way.

You got the same usual Muslim Brotherhood names you will find in every MB list and trials like the current and ex-General guides, Sheikh Youssef El-Qaradawi and Europe-based businessman Youssef El-Nada who got used to finding his assets frozen everywhere.

There are interesting names of ex- MB names that left the Brotherhood for years now if not for decades and yet they are still considered MB members in the eyes of prosecution.
Above those names comes the leader and founder of Al-Wasat PartyAbu Ela Mady who was released from prison in August 2015 after two years of detention pending investigation.

His deputy Essam Sultan is also on the list. Sultan has been detained pending investigation as well trial since August 2013.
El-Kassas and Safwan Thabet
Politician Mohamed El-Kassas and businessman Safwan Thabet
The Strong Egypt Party deputy head Mohamed El-Kassas who left the Brotherhood in 2011 before the MB would assume any kind of power found his name on the list.
The ex-MB was already a member in the famous Revolution Youth Coalition "RYC" that played an important role in 2011
Just like El-Kassas, an ex-MB and a former leading member in RYC that was disbanded in July 2012 was found in the list: Islam Lotfy
Lotfy is currently the CEO of London-based Al-Araby TV channel and is living there. Both El-Kassas and Lotfy have been critical of the Brotherhood since January 2011 joining the revolutionary youth.
These are the names and faces we know on that list. It is not only Abu Trika but also 1512 other names who face legal huge consequences.

From Legal perspective

The names mentioned in the list are accused of the following : funding the purchases of weapons , military training for terrorists to attack police and army forces, spreading false news and rumors about the Egyptian economy, monopolizing companies and cooperation's that have been confiscated by government in order to harm the national economy, collecting foreign currency from the market , smuggling what is remained from the Muslim Brotherhood's fund in foreign currency through foreign exchange companies to foreign countries.

The list and accusations are based on the Terrorist entities law issued by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in 2015.
Here is a detailed explanation of the law from Tahrir institute.
Some Human rights organizations and NGOs raised their concern about that law calling it unconstitutional and warned that the government would use to "forgo key rights and freedoms".
The terrorist list is prepared by the governmental committee assigned to confiscate and manage the assets of Muslim Brotherhood.

This committee is being challenged legally already in front of different courts above them the Administrative court which annulled some of its confiscation orders.
The list was presented by the prosecution to the Criminal court which stated in its reasoning the prosecution's investigations showed the MB, its members and supporters funded the Pro-Morsi sits-in in August 2013 as well terrorist attacks following the sits-in dispersal.

Those 1513 names can appeal the court ruling within 60 days of listing them on the terrorist list in the Egyptian State official gazette.
This is not the first time the law was used. It was used before with the Muslim Brotherhood in other cases as well the ISIS-affiliated Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis.
Yet, I think it is the first when it comes to individuals.

If those individuals remain on that list, they will face huge consequences in the upcoming 3 years aside from being listed as terrorist including being arrested at the airport upon arrival to Egypt if they are abroad and confiscating their passports.

As far as I know officially, none of the names mentioned in the list was officially convicted of those charges or was referred to a trial because of those accusations.
It is puzzling for me.
I just hope there is more discussion about this law and this list.
The media focused only on Abu Trika and Safwan Thabet because they are the most influential.
Even extreme Pro-regime TV host Lamis El-Hadidy slammed the list coz of Abu Trika and Thabet saying it is sending bad image about investments in Egypt.
But they are not alone.
The future of 1513 people and their families for the upcoming 3 years can be affected by a list and a law that are already legally and constitutionally debatable.

Giulio Regeni's disappearance's first anniversary : The curious case of the leaked video

$

Wednesday marked the first anniversary of Italian PhD student Giulio Regeni's disappearance in Egypt as his murder is still officially a mystery that affected the Egyptian-Italian relations.
The Italians and Regeni's family commemorated the sad anniversary with protests demanding the truth in the murder of that 28-years student in several Italian cities as well cities around the globe.

In Cairo, things were different as we suddenly found the Egyptian State TV broadcasting last Monday an alleged "exclusive" video clip showing late Regeni speaking Arabic in January 2016 with someone.

The video was aired suddenly in less than 24 hours after Egypt's General Prosecutor Nabil Sadek approved a request from Rome to allow Italian experts to take part in the retrieval of CCTV footage showing Regeni before his disappearance on 25 January 2016.

Regeni's dead body resurfaced later on 3 February with horrifying traces of torture. His death is still mystery as the Egyptian security authorities deny involvement from any kind in his disappearance of murder.

The 3.46 minutes clip was aired at about 10 AM Cairo Local Time showing Regeni speaking with a man, reportedly the head of West Cairo street vendors union Mohamed Abdullah.

An enhanced screen capture from the video
Mohamed Abdullah is the man who reported Giulio Regeni to Egyptian security authority on suspicion that he were a spy. According to the official Egyptian security's version of the story, the security authorities followed Regeni for 3 days and then suspended the operation.

In the video, Abdullah asked for money personally to save "his daughter and wife" as Regeni was speaking about a grant presented by some British Foundation to the Street vendors Union.

"It is not my money, I am an academic and I can not submit an application to the British foundation saying that I want the money for personal reasons," Regeni told Abdullah.

In the video clip, Regeni tells the Unionists how the money comes from the British foundation to the "Egyptian Center". It is unclear which center he was speaking about in the video.

Abdullah again raises again the matter of money asking how to get it and Regeni says that "the matter is not in his hand" and there were proposals from all over the world including Egypt submitted to get the LE 10,000 grant in March. The proposal is actually how the Union was going to use the grant.
This is what was shown and said in the edited video in nutshell.
It is unclear in what context the Egyptian State TV aired that leaked video.
In some irony, most people watched it online and did not watch it live in the news bulletin to know how it was introduced !! Nobody watches the State TV anymore.

Euronews : The clip

Ironically that edited video does not incriminate Regeni in any way because it is known that he was interested in helping the Streets Vendors Union and wanted them to join some contest to get a grant from some British foundation.
The PhD student then backed off and complained to one of his friends in Italy about that greedy unionist.
Within very few hours, a very interesting reaction came from Rome.
Italian major news websites and newspapers published online a different longer version of the clip included the edited missing parts of the Egyptian state TV's clip in a different correct timeline.

The 4.29 minutes clip carried the logo of Italy's Polizia di Stato "State police".
In that longer version, we see Abdullah moving around in some local market mostly in Cairo before sitting down at some local café and meeting with Regeni.
We see clearly Abdullah was pushing Regeni to take money from him for personal use but the Italian young man was clear in his words. " I am an academic." He said repeating that the money was not his and he got no power in that "British foundation".

Later, he made it also clear that the grant money would not be used for "political projects".
"Money for political projects is a hard thing now," Giulio Regeni told Abdullah when he asked if they "street vendors" were going to use the grant in projects like kiosks or so-called "Freedom project".
The Italian newspapers like Corriere Della Sera reported more info on how and when the video clip was recorded. It was recorded on 6 January 2016. Already from the conversation, we could hear Regeni saying that 25 January was still three weeks away.

Mohamed Abdullah recorded that conversation using a compact camera given to him by Egyptian security so accordingly, that happened after reporting Regeni to security authorities earlier.
The newspapers revealed that the British Foundation Giulio was speaking about was Antipode foundation.

The original video was reportedly handed to Italian investigators from Cairo on 6 December 2016 and it was originally 1 hour and 55 minutes including more than 40 minutes of Regeni's interview.
Only 4.29 minutes made it to the public and those minutes related to the money and Abdullah's cheap attempts to make Regeni's look suspicious in front of security forces.
There has bee no official reaction from both countries regarding that video clip.
What is even more interesting is that the clip has disappeared from the Egyptian State TV's News Sector's official website and official YouTube channel. It does not exist anymore. I only found it in Euronews.

As we are living the time of "alternative truth" as Kellyanne Conway said from couple days ago, the Pro-regime supporters are saying that the video is evidence that Regeni is a spy !!!
I do not know why I feel that we may hear about Abdullah more often.

Needless to say, to hear Giulio Regeni speaking so innocently two weeks prior his disappearance, torture and death saddened me.
This young should not have met his grim fate in Egypt in that age.
Again I do not understand why the video of Regeni was leaked in that way in Cairo as well why it disappeared.
It is another riddle added to Regeni's mystery in Egypt.
Regeni's family
Giulio Regeni's family in Italy demand the truth

What we know about Trump's Companies in Egypt

As US President Donald Trump issued his infamous executive order to ban nationals of seven Muslim countries from entering the United States for at least 90 days, people around the global why those seven countries in particular.
The executive order that has been turning the world upside down literality bars all people coming from Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Iran, Libya, Somalia and Yemen whether refugees or immigrants or just visitors for at least 90 days.

Many people asked a very good question on why those countries specifically were chosen out of 50 Muslim-majority countries especially in the executive order Trump mentions 9/11 attacks.
The 9/11 attacks hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Lebanon. None of those countries are on the ban list.
Trump's executive order
Trump signing one of his executive orders last week "AP
Some again asked why he did not include those countries like Egypt and Saudi Arabia in the list. It is a legitimate question*.
According to the White House secretary Sean Spicer those seven countries on the travel ban list were initially identified as "countries of concern" under the Obama administration.

That answer was not convincing for some who raised very serious accusation that Trump got business interest in three countries of the 9/11 attackers origin countries: Saudi Arabia, UAE and Egypt.
It turns out that Trump got companies in Egypt "2", Saudi Arabia "4" and UAE  "at least 2".
Yes, the business tycoon president is said to own two companies in Egypt and this was a surprise for me !!

I have not known before that the American business tycoon has business in Egypt or even has visited it publicly before.

According to an early Bloomberg report, Trump owns "possibly" in Egypt according to his files in the Federal Election Commission: Trump Marks Egypt and Trump Marks Egypt LLC
I have not heard about them before. No one had heard of them already in Egypt. There is more

In a quick search in the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt "AmCham Egypt", there is no match for both companies in its database which is quite interesting.

Egyptian media tried to find out more about those two companies. Pro-regime news website Youm 7 contacted Egypt's ministry of investment to know more about them.

An official anonymous source told Youm 7 that both "Trump Marks Egypt" and "Trump Marks Egypt LLC" are not registered at the Egyptian ministry of investment and that there is no company bearing the name "Trump" registered at the ministry in the first place.

Interesting !?? Wait for more.

Even quicker google search will show that the two Companies "Trump Marks Egypt Corp" and "Trump Marks Egypt LLC" are registered in DoverDelaware in the States.
Another search in the State of Delaware's official website "I love how you have a quick access to information like that", You will find more info about the two companies.

In the division of Corporations in the State of Delaware's official website, you will find nearly 96 Companies registered in that States alone bearing the name "Trump Marks" including "Trump Marks Egypt Corp" and "Trump Marks Egypt LLC".
Trump Marks
A collage of screen shots showing Trump Marks companies
registered in Delaware
The file number of "Trump Marks Egypt Corp" is "4424526" while the file number of "Trump Marks Egypt LLC" is "4424031".

Trump Marks Egypt
A screen shot for the Trump Marks Egypt companies in
Delaware's division of corporations
According to the information available in Delaware Corporations Database, "Trump Marks Egypt Corp" was founded 9/17/2007 as a Corporation.
"Trump Marks Egypt LLC" was founded also on 9/17/2007 but as Limited Liability Company.
There is nothing more about the activity about both companies.

Both Companies' registered agent in the State of Delaware is the National Registered Agents, Inc.
I was curious enough to check a couple of other companies especially that they are almost identical bearing "Trump Marks**LLC" or "Trump Marks** Corporation" and I found that many of them are founded in 2007 and registered with the National Registered Agents.
I can not find anything about the Trump Marks Egypt companies beyond that. So What we really know about those companies is the following:
  • They are not registered at Egypt's Ministry of investment
  • They are registered in the State of Delaware, United States.
  • Their activity is unclear.
It would be very helpful if US-based investigative reporters dig deeper about those companies.
FYI Spicer denied that Trump's businesses influence his decisions and executive orders.
From 2 days ago, White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus hinted out that the executive order may extend to include other countries including Egypt and Pakistan.
By the way , the Egyptian Ministry of foreign affairs has not issued a statement condemning that racist executive order as a leading Arab Middle Eastern country.

*I do not like how that question on why Trump did not include the 9/11 hijackers countries including Egypt in the travel ban list is being repeated as if it is acceptable to enforce the perception that all the people in those countries are terrorists who deserve mass punishment.
No one should be banned from travel on basis of religion or race or gender, it is simple as that.
