Within few hours inshallah, Prominent Egyptian activist and blogger Alaa Abdel Fattah is going to be released after serving 5 years in prison on charges related to illegal protesting.
Alaa Abdel Fattah was sentenced to five years in prison and another five years on probation in February 2015 on charges of rioting, participating in an unauthorized protest, disrupting the lives of citizens and exposing them to danger, attacking an employee while on duty and thuggery in the so-called “Shura council trial”.
Alaa should be a free man after a few hours but despite the fact that he finished his prison sentence officially, he is no that free.
It is half freedom because Alaa is going to spend 12 hours in a police station for the next 5 years as part of his probation just like the rest of political activists who have been released recently like Ahmed Maher of 6 April Youth and journalists like Shawkan.
Personally, I am waiting for him to update his twitter account and to say in Arabic that "the Pink Dragon is here”.
I am praying that Abdel Fattah will be released without delays and that he won’t pay the price of his father-in-law’s activism abroad.
Veteran human rights activist Bahey El-Din Hassan and a group of Egyptian dissidents including actors Khaled ABu Naga and Amr Waked are organizing an event in Washington D.C focusing on the human rights situation in Egypt and you can imagine how this is being covered in the mainstream media.
I hope that I will update this post after a few hours with a picture of Alaa outside prison.
