Egyptian Summer Tales : The Presidential Team and the race to 2018 elections

Yes , for the past couple of weeks without no introduction we found some people in Egypt and outside speaking about the upcoming presidential elections even among the strongest supporters of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

Just as he was celebrating the verification of his first official twitter account, extreme Pro-Sisi and Pro-regime Sada El-Balad TV channel host Ahmed Moussa held a very interesting poll on twitter about whether people would elect President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for a second term in 2018.

For about seven hours , the notorious TV host known for his extreme hate to the 25 January revolution held the poll and amazingly the results came unlike what he wished for.

At least 81% of the votes in the twitter poll said that they were against Sisi to run for another presidential term. Thousands of people participated in that poll that went viral for here.
Moussa and his social media team did not only delete the poll but they shut down the whole account in less than 24 hours.

Defiant as usual , Moussa claimed that hackers from Qatar and Turkey "the usual suspect" took control of his verified twitter account and manipulated in the results of the polls !!
Technically , this is untrue but this is what he had said.

He also said that he held a poll with the same question about Sisi's second term on his official Facebook page as well Sada El-Balad TV channel's official website and that the majority of people "over 90%" wanted President Sisi to run for another presidential term.

Here is a screenshot I took for the poll before he closed his account.
Up till now, people are asking why Ahmed Moussa would post such poll on twitter and ask that question in particular.
Ahmed Moussa Poll
The poll which El-Sisi lost thanks to Ahmed Moussa

For me , it was kind of wired but I felt it was a pathetic attempt to show that El-Sisi still got popularity in Egypt despite the economic crisis and that talk lately about the Presidential elections in 2018 and Presidential team, yes Presidential team

The Unlikely spokesperson for the Presidential team .. from outer space.

The firs time we heard in Egypt the words "Presidential team" and "getting ready for presidential elections 2018" was in Al-Araby TV's interview with Space scientist and former Presidential aide for science Dr. Essam Heggy in late July.

In the second part of a lengthy interview , Heggy revealed suddenly that there was a group of January revolution powers and change movement in Egypt were working to prepare for a project to run as a Presidential team for 2018 Presidential elections in the country !!

The space scientist did not give any names or any specific details about who precisely stood behind that very ambitious project or when it did start.
Already as far as I know since Tiran and Sanafir protests' crackdown , Egyptian political activists had their hands full to get their friends out of trials and jail.

The scientist who is currently staying in the United States said that he was helping in the "scientific file" in the project without having any other role and that there were other "experts" helping the "youth" in that project to present "an alternative to the Egyptian people".

Essam Heggy
Essam Heggy when he was the President's adviser for sciences in 2014
He also revealed that the Presidential team project did not agree on specific "Presidential candidates" because the main focus of that project was to find ideas and solutions for five major problems in Egypt which are : Education, health, economy, equality and women's rights.

Despite he did not mention anything related directly to political reform in those five major problems, Heggy made it clear that 'anyone believed in education and in "national reconciliation" was welcomed in the project regardless of his or her political affiliation.

Hinting out that there is no use in protests now , he believes that Presidential team can be a true alternative to the curtain.

After speaking about his small project , the Space scientist called the Egyptian armed forces to give up some of its expenses for the sake of education.

Here is the interview

And let's just say that  Essam Heggy threw stepping stone that has not stopped yet.

Despite being the ex-scientific adviser of ex-interim president Adly Mansour, Essam Heggy began to turn into an opposition figure gradually starting from the Kofta Gate scandal when he attacked that crazy army project openly in 2014.

He was attacked madly by Pro-regime which ridiculed him. Then, he left Egypt. In 2015 , he became more vocal criticizing the political situation in Egypt indirectly and then directly in 2015 and openly in 2016.

Now , Heggy speaks about the Presidential elections in 2018 and a political alternative to Egypt's current regime.
As many questions were raised about what he said , he issued that short statement on his official Facebook account.

Again, he made it clear that that "Presidential team project" was not his idea but was the idea of "the best of 25 January youth" and that he was not leading or a member in it. He was rather giving them help in the education file.

Of course, judging from his posts and his interview in Al-Tahrir newspaper , I see he understood politics very well more than many decision makers in Cairo now.

Soon enough , we found an official Facebook page for the Presidential team 2018.
So far, the page is discussing and criticizing political, economic and social news of Egypt.
Sooner , we met the head of the Presidential team campaign and it turned out she was a familiar activist face who had an experience in  similar campaigns.

The Presidential team project is headed by Hala Al-Bannay.
Al-Bannay used to be a leading member of the National association for change in 2010. She also was a member in Mohamed ElBaradei presidential campaign and a founding member of Constitution Party as well Tamaroud Campaign against Morsi.
Hala Al-Banay and ElBaradei
Hala Al-Bannay and Mohamed ElBaradei in undated photo
Now , Al-Bannay is not hiding her opposition to El-Sisi.
She also revealed that she spoke with Heggy along a group of activists in December 2015 and that she began to hint about the project itself publicly on her Facebook account in April 2016.

Cairo , we got a problem

The Presidential Team has not reached yet to a candidate to support for the upcoming presidential elections and we still do not know the rest of the team members.
But again, it was like a stepping stone.
Suddenly , we got another Facebook campaign called "Choose your president 2018" which I do not know who stands behind it for real.

On the other hand, there are ongoing disgusting media attacks targeting Heggy "he was called a {rocks photographer in NASA} and {NASA recruits idiot according to radio host Ibrahim Al-Garhi} as well Al-Bannay in a sexist disgusting way.

We got a counter-campaign calling Egyptians to gather the  40 million signatures to have Abdel El-Fattah El-Sisi for another presidential term without elections in 2018 !!!!!
Its organizers claim that they gathered thousands of signatures , I do not know where or when.
The campaign was slammed because it is unconstitutional by all measures

Then El-Sisi spoke about the 2018 Presidential elections.
In a lengthy interview with the editors in chief of state-owned newspapers , Sisi said that he would run for re-elections if it was the will of the Egyptian people in 2018.

Yes, all this happened in the past four weeks in Egypt.
Personally , I think it is still early to speak about 2018 as many things can happen till.
On the other hand, I totally see all this and feel something is happening.
I do not know if there is an ongoing fight in mount Olympus thus we see those anti-Sisi campaigns or what.

This is a tale that started in summer 2016 and God only knows whether it will finish in summer 2018 or earlier ... or even after.

Seen in Cairo : Zero Safety measures !!

I  saw that scene in Cairo while I was on my way to home from work : A group of workers trying to set up a huge billboard near Ramses Hilton hotel.
I filmed it while I was in a car, I was not driving.

They were trying to set it up without real safety measures to protect their lives considering where they were standing and how the street below them was buzzing with cars near Ramses Hilton.
I took a photo before for those workers in December in the same location. I even filmed them in a short vine clip.

It looked even more dramatic and breathtaking at night while the workers appear like a silhouette facing the big lights
I also took a similar photo for workers setting up a billboard in Giza governorate in January.
It is a scary job but it is a job after all even without safety measures.
Despite it is a multi-million business especially we are speaking a billboard in a very strategic exposed place in the heart of Cairo , I feel there is no much attention or care about the lives of those workers.

And So who gave the order to disperse Rabaa sit-in ?

This can be the most interesting news of last week by all measures. It passed so quietly to the level that no paid notice to despite its significance.

The head of Cairo Criminal court , Judge Hassan Farid stated that late prosecutor general Hisham Barakat did not order the dispersal of Pro-Morsi Rabaa sit-in.

The head Judge said that during the trial known in the media "Rabaa dispersal" where more than 600 people are facing jail time including Photo Journalist Mohamed Abou Zeid "Shawkan".
Judge Hassan said that statement when he rejected to include late Barakat who was killed in a huge bombing in June 2015 to the case by the request of the defense team.

Late prosecutor general Hisham Barakat "Al-Ahram"
It is quite interesting because I remember that Egyptian security forces dispersed the Pro-Morsi sits-in at Rabaa and Al-Nahda according to the order of Prosecutor general and general prosecution.
I remember that the Egyptian State TV used to air during its coverage for the dispersal that the General Prosecution ordered the dispersal.

The general prosecution is headed by Egypt's Prosecutor General and during then it was headed by late Hisham Barakat.
So who really ordered that dispersal !?

I am searching online to find if East Cairo prosecution was the one that issued the decision that officially changed Egypt for real but I have not found anything so far.

Instead , I found interestingly a news dated to 30 July 2013 in El-Badil newspaper quoting a source in the General Prosecution that Barakat as Prosecutor general was searching with his aides the possibility to disperse Pro-Morsi sits-in whether in Rabaa square or Nahda square.

Journalist Nariman Nagy also hinted more interestingly that late Barakat had told El-Shorouk newspaper on 31 July 2013 that Egypt's General prosecutions could not order the dispersal of Pro-Morsi's sits-in because it is outside its jurisdiction !!

A scan for the report
by Nariman Nagy
The late prosecutor general repeated to Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper the same thing on 15 August 2013 , yes after 24 hours of the forcible dispersal where not less 600 people were killed in Rabaa sit-in alone according to Egypt's National Council for Human rights.
Speaking about the National Council for Human rights , according to its official report about Rabaa dispersal in page 14 that the General Prosecution ordered in early August to disperse the sit-in assigning the ministry of interior to immediately work on dispersing both Nahda and Rabaa sits-in.

It is worth to mention that in July 2015 the Egyptian cabinet decided to change the name of  Rabaa square , where the sit-in was held.

in to Hisham Barakat officially to honor the late prosecutor general.

You may think that thing in the criminal court is trivial but I am quite amazed that the truth began to be lost already and we do not know who ordered the dispersal of Rabaa sit-in.

Still, it is not something strange in Egypt.

In another important matter, I have lost counting how many days Shawkan have spent pending investigation and then pending trial only for being an Egyptian freelance journalist covering the dispersal of Rabaa.

Unionist's contradicting statements , 5 dead men got no link to Regeni : The probe continues

$

From two weeks ago , Egypt's Prosecutor General Nabil Sadek issued a statement in Rome about the latest progress in Giulio Regeni's murder investigation and cooperation with Italian Prosecutor as well investigations.
Giulio Regeni
Late Giulio Regeni

Sadek revealed in the statement that Egyptian police had investigated and followed late Regeni briefly before his murder but suspended the operation after 3 days only when it was found that there was nothing suspicion about him.

Another important revelation in the Egyptian prosecutor general statement in Rome  There are "doubts" regarding the link between Regeni and that so-called gang that was killed in March by security forces.

Now the Egyptian government admits that Giulio Regeni was on its radar , even for some time despite all the denials in the beginning.

This progress happens after 9 months and huge unprecedented Italian escalation that affected the Egyptian-Italian relations. The Italian ambassador has not returned back to Cairo up till now following the decision of the Italian government to recall him over the Regeni probe and the cooperation with the Egyptian government.

Regeni and the street vendors unionists of West Cairo

According to the details revealed in the Egyptian media , the 26-years old Cambridge student who was working on PhD about independent unions in Egypt was reported to the Egyptian authorities by the head of street vendors independent syndicate.

Allegedly, Regeni contacted the head of that independent syndicate for an interview and the man felt suspicious and decided to report the Italian researcher to security forces as a good citizen.
I am afraid that what has been said in the international and Egyptian media from several months ago. I remember the first journalists to speak about the Street vendors independent syndicate in West Cairo and its head as well their relation to Regeni were Ahmed Ragab and Mostafa El-Marsafawy in Al-Masry Al-Youm in late February.
In their last long investigative report in Al-Masry Al-Youm independent newspaper , Ragab and El-Masrafawy explored what was known about Regeni during then in Egypt speaking with his friends and members of the street vendors syndicate who spoke with Regeni.

Interestingly, the head of West Cairo's Street vendors syndicate Mohamed Abdullah said in that interview in February that he met Giulio Regeni for nearly ten times , hinting out that he did not report to the authorities then despite he was suspicious of him.
Interestingly he added that Regeni used to meet and have a chat with the street vendors at Ahmed Helmi market in Cairo's downtown and that "half of those vendors are security informants". Well it is common belief in Cairo that street vendors are actually informants.

Even more interestingly in the same report , police officers in two police stations "Shobra and Azbakia" supervising that market denied completely that Regeni had gone there as they got officers and cameras all over the place and were not informed about him.It is a very good point because a foreign man would definitely catch attention in that bus station-turned-into market allocated by Cairo governorate to Downtown Cairo street vendors.

The Reuters report who caused a lot of controversy about Regeni quoting anonymous sources speaking about the alleged arrest of Regeni at Azbakia police station. The Egyptian interior ministry denied completely what was mentioned in the Reuters' report  and the head of Azbakia police station decided to fill a complaint against the internationally renowned news agency which was in true hot waters then.
Unionist Mohamed Abdullah "Facebook"
Abdullah was a journalist who turned to be a street vendor

Reuters is still insisting to what it claimed in April as in August, it published another special report about Giulio Regeni and in it spoke about that "a leader of one union who said that another union figure likely talked to the police about Regeni after the Italian refused to buy the second man a mobile phone and overseas flights."

Interestingly , in Al-Masry Al-Youm report it was mentioned that Regeni complained to one of his Egyptian friends about one of the officials in Street vendors syndicate.
As soon as the statement of the Egyptian Prosecutor in Rome reached Cairo , journalists began to shower the head of the street vendors syndicate Mohamed Abdullah with photo calls and inquiries about his relation with the late Italian student whose body was found in Giza early February extremely and brutally mutilated.

Amazingly , Abdullah told Independent Al-Shorouk Daily that he did not report Giulio Regeni to the security forces despite he was suspicious and that he was surprised when he heard about the Prosecutor's statement.

" I am ready to sacrifice if this would end the case and calm things between Egypt and Italy" The head of the street vendors syndicate said in his interview to Al-Shorouk on 10 September 2016.
Now on 11 September 2016, Aswat Masriya published an interview with Abdullah who claimed that he did report Regeni to the authorities because he felt suspicious about the late Italian student's questions !!
A very interesting change indeed !!

The Five-men gang and their link to Regeni

The part related to the head of street vendors syndicate and the fact that late Regeni was on the  Egyptian security's radar for some time before his death were not the only interesting part in Nabil Sadek's statement.

Do you remember that gang whose alleged members were all killed by security forces and later was accused of having Regeni's IDs as well Italy handbags because you know Italians move around in foreign countries with handbags with Italian flag badge  ?
Their names were : Salah Ali, Saad Tarek, Tarek Abdel Fattah , Mostafa Bakr "from one family" and Ibrahim Farouk.
Tarek Abdel Fattah with his daughter Rasha and her husband Salah Ali
Both Abdel Fattah and Ali are suspected members the gang
"CNN/Courtesy Rasha Tarek"
Do you remember when Italy made it clear that the Italians would not buy any attempt to accuse that alleged gang of five of being involved in Regeni's disappearance or awful murder ?

Well , the Prosecutor General's statement revealed that there were "doubts" regarding the link between Regeni and that alleged gang. In other words or according to my understanding , there is no connection between Regeni and that alleged gang.

Now, we have to raise questions about those gang members , the five men who were allegedly killed in an exchange of fire with security forces. Their families have been insisting that five men were innocent and were not involved in Regeni's murder or theft and were actually victims of the police.
The Prosecutor general is investigating the incident of those five men but I do not think that we will know the truth anytime soon.

I can not ignore the fact that the mainstream media in Egypt portrayed them as the murderers of Regeni in the 48 hours despite the Egyptian interior ministry made it clear that Regeni's items were only found at the suspects' homes.

Sadly , it is no longer Regeni's case only but Regeni and five men many people suspect that they died for nothing.

Notes on the Pro-Sisi rallies organized by the Coptic Church in NYC

$
0
0
Egypt's current President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi was in New York earlier this week to attend the UN General assembly meeting for the second year in a row.
Last year, his supporters in Egypt from businessmen and media moguls organized public diplomacy delegations that headed to New York to cheer for the President against the evil Muslim Brotherhood protests planned against him in the big apple.
This year the same businessmen/media moguls "Mohamed Al-Amin" and "Ahmed Abu Hashima" headed to New York to support El-Sisi with media figures in an unofficial delegation that was smaller in number and quieter than last year's big circus.
Abu Hashima and Sisi supporters
Ahmed Abu Hashima and members of American Coptic Association
Yet,they were not alone this year.
The Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church officially called Egyptian Copts in the United States to mobilize and join the Pro-Sisi rallies in New York.
Yes , officially the Coptic Orthodox Church in New York and New England called the Egyptian Copts in the States to head to New York to support El-Sisi in rallies.

The statement of the Churches
as it was published "Al-Watan" newspaper

Then the mother Church in Cairo sent Bishops from Egypt to organize that event and to convince the people to join those rallies
Video clips emerged online for Bishops and priests in Coptic Orthodox churches in the States calling the people to welcome the Egyptian President.
On 17 September, the head of Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Church Pope Tawadros II said that the dignity of Egypt was represented in the reception of President El-Sisi.
On 20 September , the photos came showing several buses from couple churches carrying Egyptian Christians "mostly over 40 years old " wearing T-shirts of something called "The American Coptic Association".
Comparing to the number of Egyptian-American Copts registered in the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Churches in North America , the number of Egyptian Christians who went to cheer for El-Sisi is small judging from the photos and the videos.
American Coptic Association members "Twitter"
Since then the debate has not stopped about the role of the Church in politics in Egypt. Many people were angry and amazed at how those Egyptians went to cheer for that regime they fled.
Now there are some points I would like to clarify:
  • This is not the first time that the Egyptian Coptic Church tries to mobilize its followers to support the current regime publicly and explicitly despite the Pope Tawadros II that religion has nothing to do with politics.
Pope Tawadros II himself called the people to vote for the constitution in the Constitutional referendum in 2014 in his famous Op-ed in Al-Ahram newspaper "Yes will bring the blessing".
I also remember how he created a huge controversy in late 2014 when he slammed the Arab Spring and said that it was not wise to bring up Maspero clashes then.
Due to criticism , he said that the "horrifying incident" could not be denied but the Church was focusing on the legal issues to restore the victims' rights.
  • The Church in Egypt just like Al-Azhar ,connected to the regime.
  • People were and are still worried that this can put the Egyptian Christians in danger considering the polarization in the country.
There are also some important points people tend to forget in their analysis as I have noticed
Many Morsi supporters especially and mainly, from Islamists did not waste any time actually in attacking the Egyptian Christians in a sectarian way in Twitter hashtag #Church_Sheep in Arabic.

The "sheep" term is used to fire back at the Christians because Pro-Morsi supporters and Muslim Brotherhood and supporters are called "Sheep" in Egypt by Pro-Morsi supporters. It is very civilized as you can say.
They even launched a campaign to boycott businesses owned by Christians in Egypt !!

If you think about what happened , you will see an excellent divide conquer scenario as you increase the hate between Christians and Islamists more than ever.
Sisi posters along with Pope Tawadros II poster in the Big Apple
"Facebook"
Pro-Morsi/Muslim Brotherhood/Islamists are blaming the Church and the Christians for Morsi ouster refusing to admit the amount of sectarianism in their talks towards the others.
Yes, many Christians welcomed and are still welcoming military rule over the rule of elected Morsi because of the incitement against them that took place during Morsi's rule in the Pro-MB/Islamist media.

This incitement continued after the ouster of Morsi and you can see that in his supporters' social media and accounts including the official Muslim Brotherhood website itself. "Regardless of which faction in the Brotherhood is having its passwords now"

On the other hand , with what has happened to the Christians in Iraq and Syria as well what happened from violence and attacks against Churches after Morsi's ouster , many Egyptian Christians especially from old generation welcome military rule over democracy because they believe it would bring stability, unfortunately.

By the way , old generations in Egypt whether Muslim or Christian ignore the fact that the military rule and police state in Syria and Iraq as well the discrimination between the different religious and ethnic sects led to that human tragedy we see in front of our eyes.

Despite sectarianism is still alive and strong as we have seen in the past few months , many Egyptian Christians think that regime with its deadly flaws would be better than a democracy that may bring Islamists.

It is like a closed circle especially as we do not have a true citizenship or partisan or political representation in Egypt , Egyptian Christians go back to the Church as their only sole political and social representative in front of the government.

One of the ways to separate church from the regime in Egypt is through true citizenship in Egypt so Christians won't have to listen to Bishops and priests telling them who is best to elect.

Unfortunately , the current regime does not want this happen and I believe that old generation controlling the Church does not want this to happen as well.

The regime or rather the 23 July state since 1952 loved to mix religion with politics to control the people in Egypt whether Muslims or Christians.
It is a scary game when you think about the future of Egypt.

To be honest , I feel that a good thing resulted from this whole affair in New York was the start to question the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church and its role in politics in Egypt.
It is not a taboo anymore.

The Rosetta boat tragedy

Earlier Tuesday, Egypt's Petroleum Marine services managed to float the sunken migrant boat off the shores of  Rosetta city.
According to the people of Rosetta, the Beheira governorate and the Egyptian ministry of health, the death toll increased to 202 after it was 169 on Sunday.

As the wooden boat floated back to the surface of the sea after 6 days of hitting its bottom, 33 bodies more were found.

According to the locals in Borg Rashid or Borg Rosetta , the Egyptian Navy forces took the wooden boat to Abi Kir Navy base in Alexandria.
Since early Sunda, the sea began to give more bodies to both fishermen and Navy forces' special search and rescue units.

The numbers jumped from 51 on Thursday to 148 then to 156 then to 169.

Photos coming from Borg Rashid or Borg Rosetta showing the dead bodies at Rosetta port pier with people devastated all around it.

The Rosetta general hospital's morgue has a space for only 8 bodies. It is not equipped to have all those bodies.

The small village of Borg Rashid in Rosetta already has been turned upside down thanks to that tragic incident.

Thus the bodies were left in the sun with ice blocks to try to preserve what remains from the sea water till they are transferred to other morgues and hospitals in Behaira and Alexandria.
The ice preserving the dead bodies found in the boat
on Tuesday "Burg Rashid official Facebook page"
This could be one of the worst capsized migrant boat incidents Egypt has seen so far.
I can not recall anything like that before.

How the tragedy started

It started earlier last week according to survivors.

A fishing boat was in the sea 12 km away from Borg Rasheed in the coastal city of Rasheed or Rosetta waiting to be loaded with migrants from Egypt , Syria , Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia.

Fishing boats are the cover for the illegal migrant boats in Egypt , they are granted special permits for fishing from security authorities above them Egypt's General Intelligence service. It is also booming business as well despite it is illegal.

For three days starting on Saturday, smaller speed boats carrying migrants came to the fishing boat from Edku and Rasheed or Rosetta specifically Borg Rasheed or Borg Rosetta in Beheira governorate and Borg Maghzy in Kafr El-Sheikh governorate.

Both Borg Rosetta and Borg Maghzy are considered hot spots for human trafficking and migrants in Egypt for years now. According to news reports , there are families that control that business in both towns and without doubt, those families got connections so their illegal trade goes on regardless what

The fishing boat's capacity was 150 people maximum but the small boats kept loading more and more people till it was more than full.

According to survivors , there were 450 to 480 passengers were on the board of the wooden boat.

To create space on the board of the boat , nearly 105 people mostly from African were put in the boat's cooling unit under the deck.
The families of the victims waiting to know

Then the fishing boat started to move or attempted to move but it was the end.

As soon as the captain started the engine and to move , the old fishing wooden boat began to capsize.
Some people began to jump to the sea.

Fighting death while surrounded by death

They jumped unwillingly into the sea as the boat was capsizing.

I can not imagine what happened in the following moments or minutes or rather 7 hours but women and children were the first not to be rescued but rather to die in the sea.

Women and Children mostly toddlers could not swim and according to the survivors , the smugglers did not allow life jackets and they did not have life jackets or life boats.

One Sudanese lady had a life jacket and others tried to take it from her.. in the water.

Those who knew to swim began to try to their luck. Some swam for about 10 km till they were saved by fishing boats.
According to survivors , the first group of people were saved by fishermen boats that informed the authorities on Wednesday.

There are currently accusations that authorities did not move on time and that the police received calls from people with mobile phones on the board of the ships or rather in sea asking for and got no support.

By afternoon, it was known that there was a tragedy taking place as the official news agency of Egypt, MENA began to speak about huge numbers of victims that could reach 600.
According to early numbers, 163 people were saved and 42 bodies were retrieved from the sea
At 9:51 PM Wednesday, the Egyptian armed forces issued that statement.

"The Egyptian armed forces participated in foiling an attempt of illegal immigration"In its effort to combat the illegal immigration phenomena , the borders guards managed with the cooperation with the local authorities in Behaira governorate to foil an attempt of illegal migration resulted in saving 163 people and retrieving 42 dead bodies from North East Rosetta Port , 12 miles in the sea as their boat was capsized.
How did the Borders guards foil the attempt of those migrants to leave Egypt and head to Europe when the boat capsized !!?? This is a question.

Of , course the other much more important question is :  how those small speed boat carried about 150 people when the coastal guards have a patrol to stop illegal immigration in the Mediterranean ?

On Thursday, the tragedy was aired worldwide as almost all international media reporters headed to the town of Rosetta where the Nile meets the Mediterranean and dead bodies lay on the shore.

On the same day , Behaira prosecution decided to release the 163 survivors who had been arrested pending investigation once they reached the mainland !!!

Do not ask me why but it is enough to see some of the survivors handcuffed into their hospital beds including those who lost their wives and children to know how the government thinks about its citizens.

The prosecution also detained 4 members of the crew.

The victims

According to testimonies of the survivors , Egyptian migrants came from all over the country but I would say that the majority from Nile Delta governorates but surprisingly I found family from upper Egypt among the victims.

They paid the brokers and smugglers between LE 30,000 to LE 60,000. { USD 3,000 to 6000}
The foreigners say that they paid the brokers between USD 2,000 to USD 3,000.

There is a huge development here , it is no longer young men or teenagers or children but complete families.
Yes , complete Egyptian families seeking the other side of the Mediterranean.

There are lots of children and minors among the survivors and the missing , it is not a big surprise.
Rosetta Egyptian migrants
Lots of minors among the survivors and victims "Reuters"
Italy is a magnet for poor and peasant families in Egypt to send their children to thanks to the EU laws as that oblige Italy to receive and host minor migrants.

How do those families know about all this ?

These sentences were repeated in almost all the testimonies and interviews with the survivors :
Friends and neighbors from my village went to Italy and they returned extremely rich and they told me how to do it.
My friends went to Italy and they are filthy rich right now and they told me to come over.
The men in the neighbor village returned from Italy filthy rich to the level that they are now dealing with US dollars instead of Egyptian pounds.
How do those families pay all that money when they are poor ?

They sell everything and they do not pay once. Sometimes they pay on installments or pay upon arrival to Italy or pay after settling down and earning money in Italy.
From the survivors' tales , I can safely say that we are dealing with a big network of smugglers working in Nile Delta.
Migrants' mother screaming

an army officer's action says it all "Reuters"
According to one of the survivors ,he and his late family arrived from one governorate to another and stayed at some ranch for a couple of days along with others migrants before heading to Behaira.
That type of orchestration definitely means that there is a corruption in the government and some officials are bribed to shut their eyes.

The fishermen who participated in saving the migrants told the press that Rosetta witnessed weekly trips between 3 to 4 like that.

"Borg Rashid" Facebook page claims that another trip went from Borg Rashid two days after the tragedy and arrived Italy safely.

Up till now , people are waiting to know the fate of their relatives in the sea and up till now the

Here is a video shot in the morning showing how the boat floated on Tuesday , a week later.

Another type of tragedy

Part of that ongoing tragedy that shocked many Egyptians is how the government in Egypt dealt with it as well how the mainstream media covered.
Only Saturday , President El-Sisi spoke directly about the tragedy giving his orders to the government to lower the prices of the commodities and to launch more SMEs to provide jobs for youth so they would stop leaving the country like that.

He repeated the talk about the projects to encourage the youth not to leave the country on Monday.
"Why would you leave and make us and your families sad ?" He said speaking to those Egyptian migrants.

Part of the tragedy that Mr. President El-Sisi does not understand that their families are the ones that support their decision to leave the country like that.
El-Sisi also ordered on Sunday the navy forces to send a rescue ship to the location of the sunken boat to pull it.
It supposedly arrived on Monday but it did not pull anything.
There has been no national mourning officially despite the number of Egyptian victims can exceed 100, it did exceed hundred.

Moving to the mainstream media , the Egyptian TV channels care less for those hundreds who are missing or the people who died or the survivors.Do you know that since Wednesday , there has not been a proper news coverage for this tragedy that captured the international media !!?

They are actually blaming and accusing those migrants of being selfish.

You know I find it disgusting how hypocrite TV hosts who take millions of pounds annually as salaries dare to speak about young men and attack them for trying to search for better future.

Interestingly , the Pro-Sisi supporters on twitter and Facebook are saying that we should not mourn those Egyptians or feel any regrets about them because they were greedy men who were not poor but rather rich as they paid LE 35,000 and LE 60,000 for this trip of death !!!

I am not surprised or shocked.
Those people have lost their feelings from very long time. They do not want to admit that we got a bigger problem.

You must know that migrants trips have not stopped after the Rosetta boat tragedy. Two other trips reportedly reached Italy including one with minors that are currently in the custody of Italian Red cross according to the people of Rosetta.

Only in Egypt , the high percentage of youth is a "disaster"

During the Scientific conference of the National council on Sunday , head of Central Agency for public Mobilization and Statistics "CAPMAS" General Abu Bakr El-Gendy raised an important question about overpopulation and whether it was a bless or a curse insisting that it was curse currently.

In his speech , the former army general said that other countries envied Egypt for having high youth percentage, for about 60% of its total population.

He also added that 75% of the current Egyptian population was under 40 years old and that 68% of the population are under 35% years old.

The former army general who got a masters degree in strategic resources management said that that high percentage of youth was a "disaster" in the current circumstances of Egypt !!

A video clip of the speech

I am so tired to argue but let's agree on something : The real disaster here was not having a high percentage of youth in Egypt , the real disaster was the mismanagement of youth , Egypt's biggest and most potential resource.
Rashid, Egypt

In fact , the real disaster in Egypt is the mismanagement of all its resources above them the humans as well natural resources.

The Egyptian youth are not a liability , they are a great power and asset the Egyptian regime does not want to use or to be precise does not understand its power or importance because it fears it.

Unfortunately , this statement did not have the attention it deserved this week thanks to Rosetta boat tragedy and President El-Sisi's latest speech.

Ironically, that statement can be related to Rosetta boat tragedy and why youth want to leave the country and why the media care less about the victims.

By the way , President El-Sisi declared in a previous speech that 2016 is "the Egyptian Youth's year"

The return of cronies : Ahmed Ezz writes Op-ed and Hussein Salem speaks to TV "‘Updated"

Yes , you read it right in the headline.
Infamous former NDP leading figure and steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz is back to write op-eds about the economic situation in Egypt.
Last week , we found Ezz among the guest writers in Daily Al-Masry Al-Youm in Op-eds section speaking about his optimism during the current economic crisis in Egypt in a letter to the editor-in-chief.
"A Call for optimism !!" the former leading NDP member wrote about the Egyptian economy.
According to his experience as an industrialist and a businessman as well the head of planning and  budget committee in the People's assembly for a whole decade , Ezz is telling the Egyptian people not to worry because everything will be right according to numbers.
Ahmed Ezz
Ahmed Ezz
The Pro-regime media and supporters spread his call as a testimony of an experienced businessman.
This is not the first Ezz writes about op-eds in newspapers.

Many people including me remember how he wrote a long op-ed that was published in Youm 7 website and Al-Ahram newspaper "2 pages spread" about how the National Democratic Party led by ousted Mubarak won the controversial 2010 parliamentary elections fairly  !!!

"The people's assembly elections.. a call for people to read" , that was the title of his lengthy op-ed stating the reasons then behind the so-called "landslide victory" of Egypt's ruling party then above them the economic growth in  Mubarak's time

I notice that he always uses "A Call for ...." in his op-eds.

It is worth to mention that Ezz op-ed about the NDP was published on 24 December  2010 ,a month before the 25 January protests would kick off paving the way for the Tahrir revolution that raised the slogan "Bread, Freedom and Social Justice"

Some considersEzz' op-ed in 2016 as an attempt to return back to the scene after his attempt to run for parliament was rejected in September 2015.

His op-ed was top read in Al-Masry Al-Youm for days till it was toppled by journalist Mohamed Abu El-Ghait's powerful op-ed about the true economic and social crisis in Egypt using official numbers just Ezz.  Abu El-Ghait destroys the myths presented by Ezz whether in 2010 or in 2016.

It is worth to mention that his wife , businesswoman Shahinaz El-Naggar ran for the parliament and lost as well.

Anyhow, Ezz is not the only Mubarak regime icon that made a comeback last week.
Hussein Salem and family are back to the media.
After few hours , Hussein Salem and his son as well his daughter will have their first long TV interview after the reconciliation with the Egyptian government in August.
The Salems are going to appear with Amr Adeeb in his first appearance on ONTV after 2 decades of working in Orbit network.
Adeeb is a friend of the Salems and he interviewed him a couple of times before including one in Spain.
He interviewed the whole family this time including his son and his daughter in Madrid.
The big Salem says he won't return to Egypt.

The Salems with Amr Adeeb

Needless to say , this interview will be another one where they defend themselves in front of the Egyptians.
Salem had an interview with Wael Al-Abrashi also in Spain from a year ago on Dream TV.
Interestingly , the Salems are appearing on ONTV after it was acquired by steel as well media "lately" mogul Ahmed Abu-Hashima.

Abu-Hashima is very close to the Egyptian presidency , in case you forget.
I should have written something about Abu-Hashim and his growing media empire because it is so interesting on many levels but I am lazy.

Updated on 2/10/2016

Hussein Salem and family spoke on TV and honestly I have conflict feelings from anger and pity.
Salem seems to be recovering from sort of stroke that affected his ability to speak or move.
He can bearly talk while sitting in a wheelchair.
He believes that 25 January was a "Muslim Brotherhood/Qatari" trick and he believes things are going to be great under Sisi's rule.
His best friend Mubarak did not check on him but he is a good man
His son Khaled and daughter Magda did all the talking.
They are claiming that they are broke and have nothing except about USD 147 million , which is more than one billion Egyptian pound.

That interview recorded in Madrid in the summer was before the decision to lift their names from the travel ban list.
I felt sorry when his son Khaled cried about his teenage son who died earlier because of cancer.
That was probably, the only honest thing Khaled Salem did for real in that interview.
Other than that , I have a huge problem with the amount of crap said about how poor they are when they are going to return to Egypt and manage their hotels above them the famous Jolie Ville hotel in Sharm El-Sheikh.
What provokes me is how Magda Hussein Salem insisted that the money they gave up in the reconciliation was a donation to Egypt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
For several hours "#Hussein_Salem" hashtag in Arabic was top trending in Egypt in a negative way.
Egyptian people are not stupid.

Back in May , I was waiting for a short  trip to Alexandria to start from Cairo on the board of a train at Ramses railways station. I love train trips but I hated waiting.
The train window shutters bugged me at first and looked like bars till I managed to open them as far as I remember.
