Regarding that 50,000 LE marriage decree thing

On Tuesday, Egypt’s minister of justice Ahmed El-Zend was the talk of the town after issuing a decree that obliges foreigners who want to marry Egyptian women to present investment certificates worth LE 50,000 in the wife’s bank account if the age difference between the two “exceeds 25 years”.
Minister of Justice Ahmed El-Zend

This decree targets specifically the underage marriages between Egyptian poor girls and wealthy Gulf men. It is common in summer and unfortunately, it has been spread for years if not decades especially rural areas. It is like an ugly sex trade that spread due to poverty.

Now realistically speaking, this decree won’t prevent or slow down the marriage of underage poor Egyptian girls and old Gulf men in the real world.

The LE 50,000 are equal to  USD 6,395 for God’s sake. Any wealthy man can afford this sum of money especially with dying situation of the Egyptian pound.

Many of those marriages between old Gulf men and underage Egyptian brides from the countryside are Urfi marriages or unregistered marriages.
They do not go to Mogammu El-Tahrir to get married as the law says because after all it is temporarily marriage.

They do not register them officially because they are illegal marriages in the end of the day.
Also in many of those marriages, the father of the bride who actually sells his daughter falsify her age to become older. It is a well-known trick.

Maybe, it is better to solve the problem from the roots taking radical steps in fighting poverty.

Needless to say, the decree created a huge anger among feminists and NGOs working on that file knowing that it won’t stop marriages nor it will protect for real the rights of those girls.

Also, many Egyptians felt it was like an insult to the Egyptian women because the decree made the government or rather the state offers the Egyptian women for sale in return of a cheap price.

By the way, this decree issued by the controversial minister of justice is not a new thing.

Already in 2003, a law was issued stipulating that foreign men who want to marry Egyptian women to present investment certificates worth  LE 40,000 in the wife’s bank account if the age difference between the two exceeds 30 years.

El-Zend lowered the age difference and increased the value of investment certificates.

Anyhow, summer 2016 is coming and we will see if that amendment in the law will save the poor girls in rural areas or not.

Another round of talks about GERD reaches to nothing !! Be worried , very worried

On Saturday, a new round of talks between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam “GERD” concluded in Khartoum without anything new.
The talks were attended by the three countries ministers of foreign affairs and irrigation as well technical experts. It failed in the two days in two days of trilateral talks to reach a final agreement.

A new round of talks will be held next 27-28 December. It does not look good. The tenth round of talks was held in Khartoum at a very critical time when we seem to have rocky relations with the current Sudanese regime already.
Ethiopia does not want to stop or slow down the construction of its Dam.According to Press reports, 45% of that huge dam is finished.
The Grand Ethiopian Renassiance Dam under construction  "Reuters"
The Ethiopians officials say that Egypt should not be worried about the dam and that it would not affect Egypt’s Nile water’s share.

On the other hand, the Egyptian experts say that Ethiopia fooled us and some even blame the current Egyptian administration for giving up Egypt’s rights after signing the GERD’s Declaration of principles in March. People who are concerned with the water’s share are worried and the Egyptian officials do not know the meaning of transparency.

We need honest answers because we are speaking about a true national security matter here.
BY the way according to Middle East Monitor, Egypt asked UAE to intervene directly over that dispute about GERD. UAE is one of the major investors in Ethiopia along Saudi Arabia according to my knowledge.

Unfortunately, the Egyptian mainstream media did not care that much for the talks compared to what Egypt’s minister of foreign did at the meeting praising him as a national hero.

Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry removed the Al-Jazeera microphone set up in front of him
and threw it to the ground. This is unacceptable irresponsible behavior from an Egyptian official in public abroad.
Egypt's FM minister and Al-Jazeera Microphone "Twitter"
Let alone we are speaking about Egypt’s minister of foreign affairs who is originally a diplomat !!!

If Sameh Shoukry does not want to speak or have Al-Jazeera microphone in front of him then he should ask his Sudanese host to remove it because after all he is a guest in Sudan.

Needless to say , Al-Jazeera is using this action against Shoukry and the rest of El-Sisi’s regime as a proof on their disrespect to journalism and freedom of the press.

The Egyptian administration loves to belittle itself in front of Al-Jazeera as a whole state vs. News network regardless of the current relations with Qatar.

The Pro-Sisi supporters on twitter launched a hashtag in Arabic that has been trending for hours now in Egypt and Cairo “#Sameh_Shoukry_Is_the_man”. That hashtag embodies the populist nationalist policies that we have been cursed with in Egypt since the 1960s.

The Pro-Sisi supporters are so happy with what the minister of foreign affairs did with the Al-Jazeera News channel’s microphone ignoring the results of Saturday’s talks with Ethiopia and Sudan and the future of our Nile water share.

They do not even speak or discuss the alarming results of those talks. It is a shame that people ignore that things that truly matter and celebrate irresponsible unacceptable populist actions.

Of course, history of Egypt made us learn that those people usually regret it later… after paying a huge price for that.
We should be worried, very worried

Please treat them like Ouda Tarabin !!

Egypt has at last extradited Israeli Bedouin Ouda Tarabin who was arrested in 2000 and convicted of spying to Israel in exchange of at Egyptian prisoners in Israeli prisons last week.
Early Thursday suddenly with no introductions, we found out that the Egyptian administration decided to exchange Tarabin with two Egyptian prisoners and in no time, the Bedouin who is shunned by Tarabin tribe in Sinai is received in Tel Aviv by Israeli Prime Netanyahu.

We do not know much about the Egyptian prisoners.
According to the Israeli press, they are six Egyptian prisoners and according to the Egyptian press they are involved in drug smuggling cases. Three of those Egyptian prisoners have finished their sentences.
Tarabin also finished his sentence as he was sentenced 15 years in jail in 2000.
The Israeli media also revealed that Israel agreed to give Egypt 2 percent from a joint industrial zone aka “Qualifying Industrial Zone-QIZ” as part of the deal for the release of Tarabin. The Israeli media speaks about millions of dollars according to this deal.
Israeli PM says that the 34 years old Bedouin who was arrested in Al-Arish in 2000 was not a spy to Israel. Ouda Tarabin has been denying all the charges against saying that when he was arrested, he was only visited his sister who is married and living in North Sinai.
Ouda’s father was wanted to the Egyptian authorities as well. The father who left North Sinai and moved to Israel is accused of being a spy to the Israeli forces during the Israeli occupation years in Sinai.
Now Despite he told the media following his release in Israel that his prison cell was like a tomb,Tarabin later described how he was allegedly treated not so bad like other Egyptian detainees and prisoners.

In the interview to Yediot Ahronot, Ouda Tarabeen described how he had a TV, refrigerator and a microwave in his prison cell !!

I read tat  news report and I feel very angry and sorry for the political detainees and prisoners in Egypt whose families are reporting that they are being mistreated badly especially in the Supermax Al-Aqrab prison at Tora Prison complex.

According to human rights activists and organizations, Al-Aqrab prison administration rejects the entry of heavy winter clothes, blankets and medications to the inmates and detainees.
They also deny visits to the inmates and detainees. There are reports about medical neglect in the prison.

Needless to say, the ministry of interior denies the allegations of mistreatment.

Early Sunday, the families of political detainees and prisoners in Al-Aqrab prison organized a protest at the famous staircase of the Egyptian Journalists syndicate demanding the authorities to allow visits as well the entry of heavy winter.
Part of the protest in Cairo  by Tasneem Sameh
Most of the recent political detainees and prisoners in that jail are Islamists and members of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Whether Islamists or secularists or leftists or whatever, they are humans in the end who deserve to be treated in a humane way in custody.

I think fairly enough, those prisoners and detainees should be treated like Ouda Tarabin, the officially convicted spy who had a TV, a fridge and a microwave to cook his own food as the food in his prison was horrible.
